My great grandfather, Patrick Tully was born in the 1830s, somewhere in County Cavan.  As I understand it sometimes grandfather's name can be found by the name of children of Patrick, he only had two sons, Patrick and Andrew.  He left Ireland about 1850, married in Illinois USA in 1852 to Mary Leonard (b. 1834?) and died 21 Jul 1902 in Illinois.  This is all the certain information that I have.  Would love to connect with any and all Tully families and possibly make connections over the generations. - See more at: http://www.irelandxo.com/ireland/cavan/castlerahan/message-board/patric…

  • I had a look at the 1901 census for Cavan and there are 305 people named Tully. All RC save for one lone Church of Ireland. You could use the townlands and in particular the parishes that they lived in as basis for searching for your family. Most of the RC parish records are on-line on the NLI site, fmp and Ancestry,

  • Hi Elwyn, thanks for replying.  The only problem I have is that I only know that he was from County Cavan.  No relatives names, no parish, no townlands were passed along. So if I don't know the townland or parish, where do I start?

  • Lois:

Roots Ireland has nine Patrick Tully baptismal records in the 1830s in Co. Cavan. I tried Patrick and Andrew as the fathers name but none of the nine had those names for the father. Do you have a copy of the 1902 death record which might show the parents names?

You also may want to consider autosomal DNA testing. Possibly you will match someone who has more info on the Tully family.

Since you posted in a number of parishes, I will be annotating them as duplicate messages and referring back to Bailieborough parish.
