Hello Everyone,  Please bear with me as I am new to this website.  I am looking for any information on my great grandparents Mary Loughead born 1843 in Cootehill Ireland and Gervase (Jervis) Robinson born England 1837/39.  I have a copy of their marriage certificate dated May 1865.  They married in the Parish Church Drumgoon.  Gervis (Jervis) was a soldier in 5th Dragoon Guards.  Mary's father was Hugh Loughead a Carpenter.  One of the witnesses was Margaret Loughead and I am assuming she was Mary's sister.  Mary and Gervase (Jervis) had a son Jervis Frederick Robinson born in Newbridge Ireland in 1867.  The family then returned to England to Aldershot, Hants.  My grandmother Jane Ann Elizabeth Robinson was born there in 1868.  Jervis Frederick Robinson died in Aldershot aged 2.  I find the family in Leeds Army Barracks on the 1871 Census.  In 1872 Gervase (Jervis) leaves the army as his own request after serving approx 16 years.  There is no further trace of the family in England.  I am assuming they returned to Ireland to be near Mary's family in Cootehill.  My grandmother Jane Ann Elizabeth Robinson turns up in Hull, Yorkshire to mary my grandfather James Robert Gardiner in 1887 and on the marriage certificate she says her father is a deceased soldier!.  Gervase (Jervis was born in Hook, Yorkshire and I can find the famly in Hull on the 1851 Census.  It names Gervase as Tarfus.  I think this was because of the accent and the enumerator misheard.  On this census it says Gervase was an App.  I am again assuming he was an apprentice but of what I have no idea.  He was in the Army by 1858 in the 5th Dragoon Guards based in Manchester.  I am looking for a death or anything of the Loughead's or Gervase Robinson especially a death.  There are several Gervase Robinson's in England in the North but they are not my family.I look forward to hearing from anyone with any info.  Thank you for looking.

  • Hi Linda, all our parishes are not up & running yet, but as Drumgoon is not too far from me, I decided to see what I could find for you.  I looked in the local telephone directory but no one is listed there, but then not everyone is listed.

    A. I looked up the 1901 Census & here is a link to what I found http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=19…

    B. I looked up 1911 & found them still there & here is the link

    C. When I googled the name I seen this link

Please keep me on the list.

Also Shaw (ex-Belfast) for good measure!

Linda,Perhaps if you contact Carol, she may be able to help you, I hope she kept the same email address.  Have you contacted the 5th Dragoon guards, as if he was listed as a deceased soldier, which you think was not his last occupation, perhaps he re enlisted & was on duty somewhere when he died.  Did you get all the civil & religious certificates related to your family, as I have found that there may be a different address on one of the items.  Also I found to my cost that address on marraige etc.. may not be where the family lived & may be where the bride or groom worked!!

D.You could also try contacting the Cavan Co Library for further assistance.

  • Hello all,

I also have Lougheed/Loughead ties to County Cavan. My ggg-grandmother was Letitia Lougheed (1840-1922), daughter of Adam, who married in 1857 at Killinkere, County Cavan.

She is living (widowed) at Kilnacrew (Knockbride) in 1901 http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cavan/Coroneary/Kilnacrew/1046418/ and there again (remarried) in 1911 http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cavan/Corraneary/Kilnacrew/343994/

Father Adam Lougheed was at #10 in the townland of Seefin, in the Parish of Knockbride, County Cavan (Griffiths Valuation) sometime between 1848 and 1857. He was also in the Tithe Applotment Books atr Seefin in 1823. I believe he is the Adam Lougheed (but have not yet proved) who died aged 90 at Bailieborough in 1871.

The families at Seefin & Tonyfoyle in the 1901 & 1911 censuses, linked by Carmel, are almost defintiely her siblings. I would love to hear from anyone with an interest in these families. I also have information on other Lougheeds from Cavan who are most probably related to mine. I have a snapshot of the information I have gathered at https://sites.google.com/site/lyonsdrummully/notepad/lougheed#TOC-Lougheed if anyone is interested.

    Best wishes, Stephen

  • Hi

Got really excited when I spotted 2 names in your email but on closer looking, I'm not quite sure whether they are my relations after all.  My Father was William Woods, son of Emily Loughead and Willam Woods from Cavan and Dublin.  Emily's father was Adam Loughead, mother Mary Jane McCartney and she had 6 siblings.  William 1884-1938, Charlotte (moved to America) 1892-1976. Letitia 1890-1968 (moved to America), Elizabeth 1878-?, Matilda 1891-? and Annabella 1886-?

My great gandfather Adam Loughead 1847-1931 and great grandmother Mary Jane 1848-1928 married in 1873 mentioned in the 1901 census as living in Cavan.

Does any of this make any sense to you?  I'd love to know.

  • Yes! Your g-greandfather Adam Loughead (1847-1931) was a sibling of my ggg-grandmother Letitia  (1840-1922)! Their father was (another) Adam Lougheed (1781-1871) who died at Bailieborough in Co. Cavan. Other siblings were Gibson, Samuel and John.

    - The witness Margaret you mention was possibly the Margaret Anne Loughead born 1848 and baptised in Cavan in 1849 whose father was Hugh Loughead, meaning she could be Mary's sister. This Margaret married 29 August 1868 at Castlertara, County Cavan to William Poyntz (b.1843) son of Alexander Poyntz. Castletara is ~16 miles from the parish church of Drumgoon where your ancestor was married only 3 years earlier. It is possible this is another family with a father Hugh Loughead. I hope this helps.
