My paternal great grandmother was Elizabeth Lamb b 31 Aug 1846.  Parents William Lamb and ? Margaret Reynolds.  On 4 Aug 1868 she married William Dale 1845-1879 in Drumlane.  They had the following children:  Emily 1869-1869 d at 8 days, Adam 1871-1878 d rubella, William Samuel 1873-?, Hugh Robert 1875-1960 (my grandfather), Emma ? Louise 1877-?.  I believe Eliza was b in Drumcole, Co. Cavan.  She emigrated to Peterborough, Ontario, Canada approx 1880 and married James Cunningham although I can find no marriage cert..  Wondering if perhaps she married him in Ireland as I can find no marriage in Ontario.  This is my brick wall as I can get no further back in her line.  Dale line in Belturbet is also a brick wall.  I believe his father was Adam and mother possibly Mary Anne Hughes.

Would be grateful for any and all information.

Thank you

Kindest regards

Louise Dale Martin

  • Hi Louise,

I will see if I can help you.  Using irishgenealogy.ie (free site) I looked up William Dale and he was born in Holborn Hill, Belturbet on 8 January 1873, on 28 August 1875 an unnamed male was born to them, most likely Hugh Robert.  I looked up Roots Ireland (subscription) and found him

Hugh Robert Dale    Date of Birth:    28-Aug-1875
              Date of Baptism:    10-Oct-1875
    Address:    Belturbet    Parish/District:    ANNA
    Gender:    Male    County    Co. Cavan
    Denomination:    Church Of Ireland
Father:    William Dale    Mother:    Eliza Dale
    Occupation:    Shopkeeper

William died on 25 October 1879, very sadly by suicide (on Irishgenealogy.ie)  Therefore if she remarried it would be after that.

I looked for a 2nd marriage for her but I could not find it in Co. Cavan, nor in Ireland on RootsIreland or irishgenealogy.  So where was James Cunningham from?  Where did she meet him?  Can you find them on immigration/passenger records.  Yes, according to their marriage record William's father was Adam.  I do not know Belturbet very well but in the resources I was searching the name Dale comes up regularly and in 1911 Census there was a family of Dale in Deanery St. Belturbet.   I found a probate of a will for a Hugh Dale & Adam Dale was mentioned the link is http://census.nationalarchives.ie/search/wr/details.jsp?id=IRE/ORIG/WIL…  Do utilise all the records available at any of the sites I have mentioned and it may help widen out your family tree.

For a fee Cavan Genealogy would do research for you their details are

  • Hi Carmel:

So excited to see your reply and thank you for your assistance.  The William Dale you mention above b 1873 is the son of William b 1845/6 and Eliza Lamb.  I did see the death notice for the elder William (drowning/suffocation) 1879.  I'm not entirely sure it was suicide as I don't know if he could swim but evidently the coroner/doctor thought suicide.

I down loaded the will but unfortunately I can't lighten it enough to be able to read it !!!!  argh  Do you know of any way I can do this please ?

I went to Roots Ireland and printed off every birth, death and marriage they had with surname Dale but because there is no census for the early years I was pretty much unable to put the families together ! lol  I even printed off the census reports for 1901 and 1911.  Yes ....I'm tenacious !

It appears that the records I need are just not there.  I am named for my father's aunt, Louise Dale, although I am thinking that perhaps she was given another first name and was called Louise/Louisa. Perhaps Emma/Emily Louise ?  My grandfather b 1875 was named Hugh Robert but always went by Robert.  If the naming tradition applies he was named for Williams' older brother ?

The Scots side of my ancestry is just as frustrating.  I am also finding a rather large number of Dale people there.  I'm starting to believe that they went back and forth between Ireland and Scotland.  I have my DNA done thru Ancestry and it came back 51% Scot and 24% Irish so I figure might just as well add them together at this point and be 75%.  The rest is England, Wales and Southern Ontario where I now reside and a lot of ancestors ended up.

Again, thank you so kindly for your assistance.

    Hi Louise,

I am not very good at technical stuff, but I wonder if you took a photo of it, it may work with some type of photo editing.  These documents do take time and patience to read them.  A recent book about Belturbet has been published, https://www.fourcourtspress.ie/books/2020/belturbet-county-cavan-1610/  It does not cover the years you mention but it will give you a history of the area, I have not read it so you never know what you might find.  Also keep an eye out for transcriptions of headstones as volunteers do undertake this work, though funding has to be sought to publish the work.  Best Wishes Carmel

  • Hi Carmel:

    Re:  Transcription of head stones

I would be sooo up for that.  Is there anything I can do over here in Ontario, Canada to assist.  Perhaps reading transcriptions on the stones and uploading to a site ??   I believe that most of my ancestors would be Church of Ireland.  Over here they attended All Saints Anglican church, Peterborough, Ontario, which I think is equivalent ?

Re:  The Will of Hugh Dale

I can't seem to do anything with it b/c of the format (Adobe Acrobat) it's in.  I did try !

Some years back I emailed the female reverend of local church for info but did not receive a reply.  Her name escapes me at the moment.

I understand how you feel re techie stuff.  I am 73 and find myself challenged at times.

Anywho, I thank you kindly for trying to help. It is truly appreciated.

    Kindest regards

    Hello!!! Oh my goodness.

I am part of your family down the long line of Cunninghams.

Eliza Lamb moved to Peterborough Ontario, she married James Cunningham. My 2nd Great Grandpa!

I am so excited to piece this together. I have so much to tell you!!!!!

Eliza had 3 children that I know of with William Samuel Dale.

    William Samuel Dale (90yrs)

    B: January 8, 1873 (Ireland)

    D: June 1, 1963

    Robert Hugh Dale (84yrs)

    B: August 29,1876

    D: Sept. 8, 1960

    Louise Emily Dale

    B: November 26, 1878

    D:?

After Eliza left Ireland, when she moved here to Ontario and met James, they had 4 more children. Leading to my great grandpa.

    Lillie Cunningham (65yrs)

She is buried with her sister's family "Ottenot" in Buffalo NY.

Lillie was born: December 4, 1881 (Peterborough, ON)

    D: June 7, 1947

    Herbert Cunningham (My great grandpa)

    B: Sept 6, 1883

    D: Sept. 30, 1971

    Ella Maude 'Cunningham' Ottenot

    B: 1885

    D: 1969 (Buffalo, NY, USA)

    George Lambert Cunningham

    B: 1888

    D:1967

I wondered what happened to William Dale. Thank you and that is extremely sad to know.

Also in regards to Eliza's parents. I lost my trail on her mother and have very little info on her father. They lived in Ireland so that is why i probably can't find much on them here in Canada. Eliza's father is William Lamb- they had Eliza, only daughter in 1847. That is all i could find out so far. Please contact me! It is super cool to find more family.

    Sincerely,

    Stephanie Cunningham.

    I FORGOT ALL OF THIS!!!

    James Cunningham

B: June 10, 1835 (Monaghan, Peterborough County, Ontario)

D: July 17, 1913 (North Monaghan, Peterborough County, Ontario)

***I forgot to add his info.

James Cunningham also had a first marriage. He was married to Mary Ann Green, who was possibly indigenous as Otonabee was part of the notive’s land at one point in time.

Mary Ann Green, married James Cunningham in about 1870.

Mary Ann Green died 9 years later. I know there is a marriage license for this marriage, on Ancestry.ca but I cannot view it, as it is a locked document unless paid for.

    Mary Ann Green

    B: May 24, 1846 in Otonabee Township.

D: Dec 8, 1879 in North Monaghan, Peterborough County, ON

She was 33 years old. I am wondering if because of that marriage there was no second official certificate?

She had no children during that time. From my research she died between an indigenous reserve and where the girl’s residential school was located, in Spanish ON.

This is why I have my suspicions, but I need to unlock her death certificate to know if that is true or not. I couldn’t find much info on James’ first marriage but the info above.

Hope this helps further your research!! I will continue my search here in Ontario for the answers to these questions.

What happened to Mary Ann Green?

Where is their second marriage license? Did they do second marriage papers during the late 1870’s?

What happened between her death and his meeting of Eliza?

Did he know Eliza before his first wife, Mary Ann died?

He married Eliza within the same year of his first wife, Mary Ann dying. Interesting to note.

    Sincerely,

    Stephanie

  • Okay, i am going to sound annoying but I found more about Mary Ann Green. She did have children with James Cunningham all in Canada. That just makes the family so much bigger. I unlocked the documents, i couldn't get any further without them.  here is their marriage info. still cant find an actual certificate though.
