A list of "Protestant souls" at the back of the Drung & Larah Parish Register (1785-1827) lists the unmarried protestant children in 1814. Under Latacoppel, Parish of Drung, it shows Samuel, John, Copelin and William, sons of Thomas Stinson; also Samuel, Mary, Isabella, children of William Stinson. I believe Thomas is my 4x ggrandfather, through Samuel and am seeking more information about him and his family, and the connection to William.
Thomas, and wife Eliza came to St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada around 1830-32 with some of his family. Besides John, Copelin and William. I see a James Stinson baptised 5 Dec 1829, s/o Thomas & Eliza, farmer, Lattacopple. Was he another son or perhaps a grandson.
Samuel was older (b about 1805), married and stayed behind until about 1840. Samuel's daughter Ellen was baptised 20 Feb 1831, Samuel a farmer from Magheratemple. Wife Anne, believed to be Ann Potts, aka Jane, married around 1827. Children born Ireland included Ellen, Eliza (b. 1832), Thomas (1836), and Margaret (1838). There were at least 2 other children born in Ireland, possibly from a previous marriage. Samuel died from poisoning in 1 Apr 1846. His wife Ann and her lover William Henry Holmes (aka Henry Byron) were charged with the murder but acquitted. Then there's Francis Stinson, b. around 1822, referred to a son of Samuel, and/or a brother of Copelin/Copeland who took over the hotel that Samuel had built.
Any help would would be appreciated, bmd, how it fits together, newspaper articles from 1846, etc.

Hi,
You have quite a story there, the problem is getting information for those years. You could peruse http://www.irelandoldnews.com (free) or take out a subscription with https://www.irishnewsarchive.com but look to see what years are covered. The Anglo Celt is the Cavan paper and there were some others and look at the national papers like the Irish press, court cases may be covered. You could also contact

Email: enquiries@rootsireland.ie for a fee they would do research for you, they may have access to books that I do not hold, perhaps they can direct you to local archives held in the library.Best of luck with your research.

Hi,
My family is the other side of this family question! William's son Samuel emigrated to Cavan Township, Ontario, Canada (Upper Canada at that time) approximately 1825-27. I'm a direct descendent of his first son William.
I also am looking for any information about the William Stinson family, and the connection to the Thomas Stinson family.
Thanks for identifying the Parish Register as a source of names.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Deborah Stinson

Hi,
My family history via Hall family DNA also brings me to Lattacapple and Magherintemple (Magherin Temple in Griffith's Valuation). There were many Hall families living here in 1800's and were neighbours of the Stenson families. Given the numerous marriages that I have come across in the Hall family where they married locally and relatives, there is a good chance that Hall and Stenson are connected somewhere. The other thing is that many of these Halls also emigrated to Ontario, Canada and Michigan, USA in the 1800's, many during the mid 1800's around the time of the famine which affected many of them.
In the Ireland census 1821 there are two Stenson families in Lattacapple, William Stenson 1776 in house 12 with 5.5 acres, and Charles Stenson in house 13 with 6 acres.
According to the 1821 census, William 45 and wife Margaret 36, children: Samuel 18, Arabella 16, Anne 7, Mary 2, Margaret 1.
Charles 35 and his wife Elizabeth 30, children: Samuel 12, John 10, Coplen 8, Anne 6, William 5, Francis 4, Thomas 2.

Thanks William for this information. The names of Charles and Elizabeth's family are the same as in my family, and the ages more or less correspond to my ggg grandfather Samuel and his brothers. But other references state his father as Thomas not Charles, so I'm not sure where this information fits in. What are the chances of another Stinson/Stinson family with the same named five sons of very similar ages living in or near Lattacapple around 1821? I'll certainly file this away and hopefully come across something to explain.

I am very excited to have read these posts, and am sorry that 3 years had gone by since it was first sent.
My name is richard colwell, and i am the 3rd great grandson of William Stinson and Margaret Hopkins of Latticapple, Drung, Cavan. I note that there is a great deal of confusion on the Stinson clan, and i believe that much of it stems from the reuse of given names. I have opted to use the ancestry dna platform to help delineate stinson relatives, and thus encourage you to also do so. if we can show a number of people descending from Thomas, it may clear up the lines.
Please contact me for information on my line if that is desirable. rlcolwell@gmail.com
William Stinson & Margaret Hopkins begat: MaryANN, MARGARET, William, Eliza, Jane, Copeland, Frances, Sally, Ellen, and Susanna.
There may be older siblings, but the only piece of primary documentation i have lists these as the children and their ages in 1888.

cousin rich
