I am looking for some confirmation on my Campbell/Reilly connection.   My G Grandfather was John Reilly son of Joseph Reilly and Bridget Campbell.  John was born around 1871-1872 depending on the record.  On his US naturalization form he listed Drumbess as the townland.  I see in the 1841 census that there was an Edward Campbell with a daughter Biddy b. 1839 living in Drumbess then I can never find them again.  No record for Biddy's birth but the age fits in with Joseph.  There are Reillys living in Drumbess also so my assumption would be that Biddy is my Bridget.  Does anyone have any connection to either of these families or know of somwhere I can find more information.   Thank You in advance,   Karen

    Hi Karen,

I will see if I can help you.  When did John Reilly go to America and when was he naturalised, as the name is very popular, I would need a little more information.  I did look up Roots Ireland for his baptismal record, but it did not show up there, but this may be because the records are not available.  Also when did he die? as sometimes death records give a little more information.

    Regards Carmel

Hi Karen,  Meanwhile, I looked up Roots Ireland to see if there were any other children born to the couple, in Drumbess..

There was a James baptised on 27 October 1870, Patrick baptised 13 March 1869, Catherine baptised 7 July 1873, Edward baptised 9 August 1875, Joseph 19 September 1876, Francis 7 June 1879.  Using this information I found the family in the 1901 Census, this is free to search.  Joseph (70), Bridget (60) and Catherine, Francis & Edward are with them.  This is the link http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cavan/Corr/Drumbess/10…

In 1911, Bridget had died meanwhile, but Joseph was still living at 80 years old with his son Francis and his wife Maggie, this is the link for this record http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cavan/Corr/Drumbess/31…

I hope this helps you.  Regards Carmel

  • Thank you Carmel for checking the information.  John Reilly according to his naturalization papers his birthdate is November 15, 1876.  I have the original copy but my grandmother, his daughter said the date was November 10, 1871.  His headstone says 1870 so it's anyone's guess.  He arrived in Philadelphia in 1893 and became a citizen in 1899. I do believe the information you have on Joseph is correct.  I did find a copy of his will leaving his estate to Francis Reilly and/or Conor Reilly.  I have no idea who Conor is but will work on that.

As far as Bridget Campbell's  immediate family I am at a standstill for now. Thank you so much for looking.   Karen
