I am seeking information about my ancestors, John Fyfe (1797-1868) and his wife Margaret Crawford (c. 1806-1860). They lived at Lakeview Cottage, Brankhill Townland near Arva, Killashandra Parish, County Cavan. John was agriculturalist on Lord Gosford's Estate.

They married somewhere in County Cavan about 1833, but I don't know where. Nor do I know Margaret's birthplace or parents' names.

I have the 1841 Census and several newspaper articles about John. I also have Frank McCaughey's 1998 book, Arva - Sources for a Local History.

Suggestions for further research welcome.

  • Dennis,

Not sure if you are on Ancestry, but there are a few trees there of your family...one with DNA matches.

There is a birth record for Margaret Crawford born 31 Oct 1808. Her parents are James Crawford and Isabella, no

surname listed. It shows birthplaces as "Presbyterian, Boardmills, Down, Ireland". Given that she named her only

daughter Isabella, this could be her.

    Regards,

  • Thanks Carolyn.

The family tree with DNA links was posted by one of my cousins. I haven't found enough evidence to convince me that Margaret Crawford, born 1808 at Boardmills, is my ancestor. Unfortunately, there are many family trees online where the information is slavishly copied from another tree.

Ros Davies' "Co. Down, Northern Ireland Family History Research Site" lists a Margaret Fyfe of county Down marrying Bartholomew Hagan 13 Feb 1827 at Downpatrick Church of Ireland. Although her age is not given, Downpatrick is not far from Boardmills and a lot closer than Arvagh.
