Leinster or Linster Family
Hello, I would greatly appreciate any help in researching my paternal ancestors, I have little information about them as I lost both my father and grandfather when I was quite young. One major anomaly I have found is the two ways of spelling our surname, it seems to appear quite often without the 'e' which makes researching a bit of a pain!
My father was born in Runcorn, my grandfather in Toxteth, but some of his brothers were born in Ireland, a lot of the family are buried in Toxteth Cemetry.
the 1911 census contains the fact he was born in Cavan - Name:James LinsterAge in 1911:56Estimated Birth Year:abt 1855Relation to Head:HeadGender:MaleBirth Place:Cavan, IrelandCivil Parish:Toxteth ParkCounty/Island:LancashireCountry:EnglandStreet address:118 Wellington Road LiverpoolMarital Status:MarriedOccupation:Police PensionerRegistration district:Toxteth ParkRegistration District Number:454Sub-registration district:Toxteth Park South WestED, institution, or vessel:7Piece:22234 Household Members: Name Age James Linster 56 Elizabeth Linster 55 George Linster 25 Thomas Linster 18 James Linster 15 Charles Linster 23
Jame and Elizabeth were married in 1878 Details: James Linster Date of Registration:Jan-Feb-Mar 1878 Registration district: Cavan Volume:3 Page Number:103FHL Film Number:101253
I have now discovered my great great ugrandfathers name was William, not James as first thought, and on his marriage certificate it states Kilmore as the parish whilst his wife Sarah Braden was Cavan - I cannot find any birth/death certificates for either of them or any further children apart from my great grandfather James.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Pagan, I am looking over old queries and yours popped up, I searched Roots Ireland 1840 to 1860 and found both names in Cavan and Leitrim (ajoined counties) not a lot of them but in double figures, there was also one in County Down, what popped up was that they were primarily Presbyterian; one was a Methodist and the rest Church of Ireland, (Anglican) now if the Presbyterian congregation was small they often used the C of I for ceromonies.
There was also a Lynster in Roscommon. Cavan and Leitirm are counties and Kilmore is a diocese, you can see the areas herehttps://www.townlands.ie/
Civil registration for Protestant marriages was introduced in 1845 and you can view them free here, search both names as there are a few of them.
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ Click on civil, all BMDs from 1864, the church records on the site are only for Dubliin; Cork and Kerry.
Some Presbyterian records are not online and C of I records were lost in the civil war , over 40%. Also
Have a look at the marriages in the site above and the later post 1864 and if you know the religion I will look to see what older church records I can access.
Also from 1848 to 1864 Griffiths Valuation complete with maps and records the landlord and primary tenants, head of house, you can see that free here

Hi Pat, thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my original post, a number of years have passed and although the information I have found is still quite scant I have managed to find a few more details. I have established both my g/grandparents and their parents worked on the Farnham House estates belonging to the Maxwell family, I believe my great grandmother was born on one of estates and lived at Drumbar Lodge as this is stated on their marriage certificate.
The rest is a work in progress but I will definitely have another look at the links you have provided, thank you again for your time.
Regards
Pagan

Hi thank you for the information and getting back, had a look at the private Facebook page Cavan genealogy and there is a lady there who has posted about the family if you are not on the FB page you can apply to join and searh the name, she has numerous posts including the Farnham Estate. Did you als Cavan Library if the archives had any of the estate papers or if they are held anywher.
Good Luck
Pat
