I have recently begun researching my Irish Ancestry but am a little lost at the moment. I have established that my Grandfather William Henry FOSTER was possibly born in Kilmore County Cavan, on July 25,1888 and came to Australia at the age of around 4 years. His father was also William Foster, apparently a veterinarian, his wife was Mary Anne foster (Do not know her maiden name) they arrived along with three other children, Ida, born 1882, Isabella, born 1884 and Alfred, born 1886.

I would like to know the maiden name of his wife and any other details about her husband.

Thank you

George

  • Hi George

There is a baptism record of William Foster with father named William born 1888 in Cavan on www.rootsireland.ie/ The parish was Kilmore Church of Ireland

The record MAY have the mother's name - some do - some don't.

You need to purchase credit to view the full record on rootsireland

There are 4 marriage records of a William Foster to a Mary Ann (but none in Cavan so perhaps she was from elsewhere); they are:

1848 Waterford  1889 Antrim 1899 Westmeath 1909 Leitrim; the last would be the only realistic option if he was born in 1888

  • There?s only 1 Alfred Foster birth in Ireland in 1886. That?s for Alfred Edmond Foster, whose birth was registered in Cavan Jan ? Mar 1886 Volume 3, page 51. That seems to fit pretty well with the information you have given. Might be worth getting that to get the family townland (address) and the mother?s maiden name. You could then search backwards from that.

You can order a photocopy from GRO Roscommon for ?4 per certificate. Put the place, year, quarter (where there is one), volume & page number on the application form (anywhere). Don?t worry about leaving some boxes blank. You don?t need to fill them all in if you have the reference details. http://www.groireland.ie/ You have to post or fax the form to them but they will e-mail the copy certificate to you if you wish. Tick the relevant box on the form.

Griffiths Valuation has just one William Foster listed in 1857 in Kilmore parish. He had a farm, outbuildings and about 25 acres of land, on plot 3, 4 & 5 in that townland.

This looks to be that farm in 1901, probably split into 2 farms:
