Seeking info on the burial site of Josephine Gilchrist, nee Dowd, deceased  24th Mar 1931 possibly in Lavey.  Josephine was born 24/11/1907 in Emyvale, Monaghan and was the eldest daughter of Michael Dowd and Bridgid Gilchrist.

She married Patrick Gilchrist (Gilcreest) in Lavey, Cavan (date uncertain).

I am one of their grandsons -  my grandfather, Patrick Gilchrist, born in Killyconnan and a pharmacist of Kilnaleck, remarried after Josephine's death.

Together they had a son, my father, Seamus Gilchrist, born 6/7/1930, died 21/3/2018.  Seamus joined the Royal Air Force in the early 1950's.

Josephine's siblings were Christina Dowd, James Joseph Dowd, & Michael Philip Dowd- all potentially born in Smithboro, Monoghan.

I am specifically trying to locate her burial site and I am also in contact with Lavey Parish.

Many thanks

David Gilchrist

  • For reference - at the marriage of the couple in June 1929 gives the bride's name as Margaret Catherine Josephine Dowd

There's a possible match for her death indexed as Margaret in 1931, reported age 23 - actual register has her name as Margaret Josephine -  'wife of a Chemist', place of deaths Derryglen, which is a townland in Lavey civil parish.

  • No sign that I could find of a newspaper death notice in the collection on FindMyPast, maybe a local newspaper from the Cavan town or nearby might have something.  Death notices often include name of the church and graveyard.

Cavan Heritage has a project running to digitize old graveyard records, but unfortunately none seem to cover back as far as 1931.

According to a entry for Lavey as part of the of Duchás Heritage Schools Folk-lore project in the 1930 there were three graveyards in the parish :

"...upper Lavey graveyard is situated in the townland of Knocknagilla. The lower Lavey graveyard is in the townland of Killyconnan, and the old graveyard is in the townland of Lavey. They are all in use except the old graveyard..."

  • Shane,  thank you so much - this info is truly enlightening !

As you will have seen from the dates, my father lost his mother whilst still a baby - so his memory of her was scant, to say the least.

It also appears that a 'Patrick Gilchrist' was the registrar at the Lavey cemetery for a period of time.  Unknown whether this is my grandfather - I should be able find out eventually.

I am in contact with Lavey Parish who I have informed of your latest info.

    Again, many thanks

    David
