My g. grandfather was James Henry b. 1824. My g. g. grandfather was Robert Henry b. 1787. Griffith’s Valuation, 1847-1864, Robert Henry is a tenant of Lord Farnham in the parish of Lurgan, town of Aghaloughan. It is possible Robert Sr. had a brother James also living on the estate in 1834 who requested timber for a new house from Lord Farnham who answered, “I cannot give my consent.”
Robert Henry Jr. and Sr. as well as James Henry appear in Tithe Applotment Book. I don't know the date of that survey.
Mary Ann (Graham) Henry, Robert’s wife would have been 47 years of age in 1838 when she emigrated to Canada. The ages of Robert’s sons at that time would have been, James (14), Robert (12), Simon (11), Johnson (6). My g. g. grandfather and some of his sons must have stayed in Aghaloughan. One son, Johnson Henry on 1911 Canadian census says he emigrated in 1838. So it looks like he left with his mother at that time, being the youngest son.
I would like to be able to find evidence of application for any assistance the Henry family made while on the Farnham Estate in 1838 in order to reach Canada.
A James Henry landed in N. Y., New York 20 Apr 1841 from Liverpool, England on the Stephen Whitney at the age of 19.  Robert, James and Johnson held land in Goderich, Ontario, Canada in 1851.
I have no birth documents. I would like to find some records from Lord Farnham estate.

  • I see a Henry family still in Aghaloughan in 1901:

    And 1911:

Andrew Henry died 23.12.1901. His will should be in the National Archives in Dublin:

Family were Presbyterian. Nearest church may be Bellasis. Their baptisms start 1833, marriages 1845. Copy held in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast.

The tithe applotment records for Aghaloughan date to 1825.

Griffiths Valuation for 1856 shows 2 Henry farms there. Plot 4 which was a 24 acre farm occupied by Andrew Henry and plot 6 which was 33 acres occupied by Robert Henry.

Try National Archives in Dublin for Farnham estate papers:

  • Thank you very much for all the work you have done. I am stumped at this point. Looks like I cannot access the Farnham papers without going to Ireland. I don't know who Robert Henry's parents were. I just need to mull things over a bit more.

  • In seeking the surname HENRY in N. Ireland you should be aware that very early name variants used other names. Also anyone seeking possible connections should review information regarding DNA testing. FamilyTreeDNA already has a HENRY surname project that you can check out for free. AncestryDNA and 23andmeDNA would require someone to take a DNA test to start a search. If you have a living relative with the HENRY surname consider a DNA test. If you are a Henry descendant you should also consider a genealogyDNA test.

www.ysearch.org can also be searched for free to look for anyone who tested yDNA.

www.mitosearch.org can also be search for free to look for anyone who tested mtDNA

None of this will generate instant results and you will need to dig down into any possible names that may show up and try to make contact. (often when you send an email you do not receive a response from the other person who may not review your email or want to respond to an unknown email address.)

  • Hi Arleigh - we are 2nd cousins!

Two of my g-grandparents were both Henrys from this same line:
One of my g-grandfathers was the son of Robert Henry (one of the boys born in Ireland): Simon (the Dude) Henry, a mason/bricklayer in southern Manitoba
and one of my g-grandmothers was the daughter of Johnston, another one of the boy: in her second marriage, she married Simon^, and my paternal grandfather was one of the three children born to that marriage.
Did you know that Johnston and Robert each married a Henry woman?  They were sisters from Scotland: Elizabeth and Agnes Henry.

I am in contact with a number of us - second cousins, and second cousins-once-removed - who have reached the same brick wall - finding a record of where in Cavan Robert Simon and Mary Ann lived, and who *their* parents were, etc.
If you're interested, we could connect via email... let me know!  :-)

Where did you find evidence that 'our' Robert (Simon) Henry (and others) resided on the Farnham Estate?
I am looking forward to connecting with you!

  • Hello!

I'm not sure if my Henry ancestors are the same as yours, but I am stuck on my Henry family and I'm wondering if you have any advice!

On the 1821 Census there are a lot of Henry families that lived at Pollamalady in Lurgan. My relatives are John Henry (born 1796) and Frances Henry (born 1798), they were also Presbyterian and their children were born in Ballyjamesduff.

There is also a Robert Henry family at Pollamalady - Robert (born 1787) and his wife Henrietta (born 1787) and their son Charles (born 1816). Is this the family you're talking about? I don't see any reference to a Simon though, unless he was born after 1821? It sounds like your Henry family came to Canada though, whereas mine came to NY, so I feel like they are not the same Henrys but thought I would comment even though this thread is super old!
