    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I don?t know if you have checked rootsireland.ie where there is a baptism for a John Jones Ferguson, 1834, Co. Cavan and a brother William Henry, 1838 in Co. Cavan. Both of these boys were born to a father first name Henry. As this is a subscription site, I am limited in what I can see. I can?t see John Jones? marriage record on that site. There is also a marriage record for a Henry Ferguson in 1833 in Co. Cavan, possibly John and William?s parents. I think it would be a good idea to have a look.

There is also a Henry Ferguson mentioned in the 1821 Census aged 11 years grandson of John and Catherine Jones. Henry has a brother John aged 5 years. Could this be your Henry perhaps?

  • Hi Clare

I'm not sure if I have already replied to this message to thank you for the information. I believe this is my family. Although John Jones Ferguson was baptised in 1834 he was born 4 years earlier in 1830. It is interesting to note that his parents married after this date in 1833!! John and his brother William emigrated to New Zealand and eventually both became farmers. John married Mary Ann Atkinson also of Cavan on 20 Oct 1866 Hokitika, NZ. They are my Gr Grandparents. The middle name of 'Jones' must come from John and Catherine Jones. Thank you so much for taking the time to research and send this information to me. I hope in time I will find out more about my Cavan heritage.

    Kind regards

  • Julie,

we may be distantly related. My great great grandfather was William Henry Ferguson born in 1838 in County Cavan Ireland. I have been searching for his antecedents and had located his father Henry Ferguson ( a shoemaker) who married Eleanor ( Ellen) Brownlee in 1833. I was unaware of William Henry's  brother(s?) until I saw your post today. I know William Henry came to Christchurch New Zealand when he was 24  on the ship Canterbury arriving in 1864, but I did not of course know his brother married and then did likewise and settled in Hokitika. William Henry married in Christchurch in 1869 and eventually they moved, with children to Wellington. I have not yet gone back before Henry Ferguson so know nothing of the earlier "Jones" connection.
