Looking to connect with relatives of Thomas Brady born around 1780 and John Brady born 1797 in County Cavan.  Their fathers name was Andrew Brady and their mother was Nelly Lawlor.  John came to Glengarry County, Ontario Canada around 1820-1822  and married Racheal McDonell and Thomas came to Canada after the death of his wife Mary Anne Gartland around the mid  20's.  He came with his 5 children Patrick, Thomas, Catherine,Mary Anne and Elizabeth.  Thomas married for a second time to Mary Barnham and had 4 more children..   Both brothers settled in Prescott County, Ontario, Canada.  The area they lived in was named after them and was called Bradyville.   Eventually Bradyville was renamed to Alfred, Ontario, Canada.  Thanks for any help.  Suse.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked on Roots Ireland but could not find the baptismal records for the children of Thomas and Mary Anne. Likely they were baptized in a church that no longer has records back to the 1820s.

Maybe someone will see your post and see a connection. In the interim, you may want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

  • Roger,

Thank you for trying to find the baptismal records for Thomas Brady (given Thomas's birth date around 1780 marriage would have taken place sometime between 1800-1805) and Mary Anne (Ann) Gartland and their children as well as his brother John.   Hopefully now that their information is out there someone who is researching either the Brady's or Gartlands will see the information I have posted and respond.  Thanks again for all your help.

    Suse.

  • I am curious if you have learned anything more about the Nelly Lawlor.  I am searching for the parents of my g-g-grandfather Philip Augustus Fitzpatrick from DRumlane Parish/Belturbet.  I have found a death certificate that lists his parents as John Fitzpatrick and Ann Lawler.  I know the spelling is different, but I know names are often spelled differently when written on documents.  I have found little to nothing about a Lawler family in Drumlane or County Cavan, so I thought i would ask. It is a long shot, but I don't have any short shots to follow.

  • Deb,

Thank you for your interest.  I got the name Nelly Lawlor/lawler from marriage information about John Brady born around 1897 in County Cavan, Ireland. He is the brother to my gg grandfatherThomas Brady.   They came to Canada in the early 1820's and settled in Alfred, Ontario, Canada..   In the marriage information John listed Andrew Brady as his father and Fanny Lawler as his mother and he also indicated he was from County Cavan, Ireland.   I am not sure whether Andrew Brady and Fanny Lawler are from County Cavan - I am just assuming as this is where John Brady said he was from..  John married Rachel McDonnell from Alexandria, Glengarry County, Ontario, Canada in 1822..  So far that is all the information I have.   I did note though that the spelling for Fanny was Lawler not lawlor.in the marriage record.   I keep trying to find out information both for Andrew Brady and Fanny Lawler but to no avail.   I am hoping as more people search for their roots someone will include them in their family tree.   I wonder if in County Cavan they have a newspaper or radio program that they can post the names of Andrew Brady and Nelly Lawler  to see if their are any descendents still living in the area.

As far as I know only Thomas and John came to Canada.  I got this information through a book written about the Histories of Prescott County and they only mentioned Thomas and his brother John.   I am assuming with large families back in the day there are lots of descendents for Andrew Brady and Nelly Lawler still back in County Cavan.    I am also hoping that decendents of Andrew and Nelly's brothers and sisters will also be researching and someday we will make a connection.   I also found some Lawler/lawlor's living where Thomas Brady was living in Prescott County area but so far I have been unable to link them to my tree.  (They spelt the name with an o instead of an e so I thought maybe this was how her name should have been spelt). Now that I have learned that it is also spelt with the e like in John's marriage record I will change it from Lawlor to Lawler in my tree.   Please keep in touch with any new information or questions and I will do the same.  Good luck in your search.  Suse.

  • Your information is about as incomplete as mine.  I have searched for years for the parents of my great-great-grandfather Philip Augustus Fitzpatrick, who was listed in his obit as a native of Drumlane Parish, County Cavan.  He was born about 1828 and came to New York City about 1848.  He died in New York City in 1874 at age 46, a fairly wealty and successful businessman.  Because I kept hitting the great brick wall, I started reconstructing his family.  One older brother, who also died in New York City, has John Fitzpatrick and Ann Lawler listed as his parents on the death certificate.   I also found a Mary Doyle who died in New York City in the early 1900s whose death certificate also lists John Fitzpatrick and Ann Lawler as her parents.  I have ordered her death certificate to see if the actual document has any additional information.  Both death certificates just list the parents as being born in Ireland.  My g-g-grandfather and the siblings I have found all list either Drumlane Parish or Belturbet as the Irish home.  There are alot of John Fitzpatricks in County Cavan ... but I have had no luck finding any Lawlers.  I am assuming that Ann Lawler and John Fitzpatrick were born around 1800, give or take five years.  The first child I know about was born in 1821 and died in New York City in 1860.  Her obit listed her as being a native of Belturbet.  Let's stay in touch ... maybe one of us will find something meaningful.  My home email is debwoolley@comcast.net
