We live in Western Australia and believe our forebears came from Co Cavan

John Philip (Shoemaker and Farmer Married Bridget Frances Moore.

At least six of their children came to Australia

1  Philip b 1820 arrived 1842 died Victoria 21/05/1879.  Married Ann Chisholm b 1832 in Scotland d 04/04/1919 in Victoria.

2   Patrick arrived Victoria 1844

3   William arrived 1846 went to California.

4   James b 1829/30 left Glasgow on the Martin Luther Sept 1848 d 17/06/1880 Victoria married Mary Anne Meaney 16/08/1864 in Geelong Victoria.  Mary Anne was born 1833/34 Ennis Co Clare d 08/06/1866 Victoria

5   Anne arrived with James and cousin Patrick Fox

6   Susan b 1834 arrived with James d 13/01/1902 Geelong Victoria.  Married James Ledgerwood b Tasmania 1833 d Geelong 1920.

If anyone can help with details of John Philip opf Bridget Frances or any of the others we would be most grateful.

    The only lead I could find was on the 1825-1828  Tithe listings. www.titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie

    There were 18 Callaghans and 1 Callahan listed for Co. Cavan. There was a John Callaghan in Denn civil parish. There was also a Phil in Crosserlough civil parish. I also gave you links to the 1856 Griffiths data for those two parishes. Did not know if the father John Philip was still in Cavan (or alive) in 1856.

  • Thanks Roger.  Really appreciate that.

    We don't know anything about the parents.  John Philip may have died and the estate passed on to the older children (There may have been others) which is why the younger ones moved to Australia over six years from 1842.

    There are some records apparently with the Clyde Pastoral Co who provided assisted passage to Australia in exchange for some years of indentured labour, which I'm chasing.

  • Searched the Clyde Papers at the NSW State Library.  Could only get through Vols 3&4 in the time I had.  Numerous mentions of the Callaghans associated with the Clyde Co and Golf Hill in Victoria, but not much I didn't already know.

    This morning searched the State Library in San Francisco USA for any info relating to one of the Callaghan brothers William who also worked with Philip at Golf Hill.  He left Victoria in Australia to follow the gold rush in California (1849?)  Not much luck, as I dont really have a lot to go on other than he was John and Bridget's son and born in County Cavan.
