    Hello Curious Aussie,

I went to www.rootsireland.ie and searched for a marriage record for Michael Feeley and Bridget Brady but to no avail.  It's possible they married in Australia.

I did however find a marriage record for Michael Brady married to Bridget Farrelly.  They married in the parish of Castlerahan in Co. Cavan in 1818.  It's possible your birthdates may be a little off.  I went to the Cavan genealogy site to see what records there are and how far back they go, but the site doesn't have them all listed yet.

However ,some good news.   As you may know all the census returns countrywide from 1821 until 1901 were destroyed in a fire in the four courts in 1922.   This has made genealogy almost impossible here in Ireland.  Church records started around the 1820's onwards.  Only very old towns had any records going back to 1790 or so.  Civil registration started in 1864.

However on the day of the Fourcourts explosions, a few fragments of census were taken out of the library and in the reading room.  Part of Cavan is one of those fragments to survive, and the parish of Castlerahan is one of the parishes.   These records are now in the National Archives in Dublin.   So many people would love to be able to access census records going so far back.

Anyway, keep an open mind regarding birth dates.  If these were taken from tombstones etc, there's agood chance they are incorrect.

Most people who emigrated were illiterate and undocumented.  They didn't know how to spell their names and hadn't a clue as to what age they were.  At the port of arrival their names were recorded phonetically, their ages were only guessed, and this is the information that followed them for the rest of their lives.

The proof of this occured in 1909 when the old age pension was introduced into ireland.  People had to prove their ages and were forced to go through baptismal records to establish when they were born.  That is why there is such HUGE discrepancies between ages in the 1901 census and the 1911 census of Ireland.  Dates were found to be out by many many years in some cases.

    Hope this helps you ,

  • Hello Anne ,                                                                                                                                                    I will amend that date on my family tree, it has been a bit of a struggle with dates as on sites like mundia they give matches to people ,then i cross referenced as much as i could and it all seemed to fit into place , i can only hope more information comes to light in the future once the cavan site has updated its list. Now to find out when and how the Brady and Feeley clans came to Broken Hill NSW .                     Thankyou for your time and effort it is appreciated .                                                                                      David

  • Hi David,

I found a marriage for Bridget Brady and Michael Feeley  on Ancestry. They were married on 17 Jan.1853

    in Adelaide-Australia Marriage Index 1788-1950,Page no.31,Volume no.17.

There is also a record of Bridget Feeley's death ,age 40,in Peachy Belt,SA.Her death was registered in Port Gawler,SA,Page no.30,Vol.no.28.She died on 28 June,1867.

If you don't belong to Ancestry, you can go to any public library and access the genealogical computer for

free if you are a  member of the library. The "Digger" program is very good for Aussie births, deaths and Marriages;that's available at genealogical societies computers, and much more information.

    Hope this helps,

    Margot.

    • Hi margot, thankyou for the marriage info , i have a fair bit of the aussie Feeley side and the Brady side, irish and australian, but Michael Feeley is the elusive one. I have no information other than he married Bridget Brady and on their descendants thereafter all the way down the family tree to my wifes side of the family , so once again i thankyou for that marriage date because its another piece in the puzzle solved .   Best Regards     David.

  • Hi everyone,

I really hope people are still signed up to this site. My Name is Paul Baxter, (originally from country Victoria - Australia) but now live in Queensland. You have all just solved a massive brick wall that I've been struggling with for over ten years. My 2nd Great Grandmother was Mary Sherlock (who married Burtolo Mafferzoni in Maldon Victoria, also buried in Maldon), Mary came to Australia under her mother's name - Bridget Brady, I haven;t been able to find information on Bridget other than that she was married to Thomas Sherlock. Mary was born 1845 ballyjamesduff Co. Cavan,  Bridget's father must be Michael Brady.

This is huge for me as I've tried to solve this for such a long time. Hope someone can get back to me soon to confirm

    Thanks Paul
