Looking for information about Francis and Eliza McCabe, parents of Terence McCabe.
I would love to know the specific parish so we can visit the area this September.
The following was taken from the publication: HISTORY OF HARRISON COUNTY, IOWA. National Publishing Company, Chicago, Ill. 1891.
Terence McCabe was born in County Cavan, Ireland, on November 28, 1837. He is the son of Francis and Eliza McCabe, who are also natives of the Emerald Isle. He was the youngest of eight children. Terence, John, Mary, Francis, Eliza, Frances and Agnes. The name of the eight child is unknown . His parents came to America, April 16, 1840, when he was two years of age. He remained in his native land with his grandparents until he was nine. In 1846 he came to America with friends and was met by his father at Boston Harbor with whom he lived in Canton, Massachusetts, until 1848. His family then settled on a farm near Oskosh, Wisconsin...

I'm in a Hopkins dna group and match a couple McCabes in Co Mayo.
My Hopkins were in Chicago in the 1880's.
Nora Hopkins Fitzgerald may have more information on the McCabe line.

Thanks for the info, Patrick. Cos. Cavan and Mayo have two counties between them. It's not likely that your McCabes and mine are closely related. People didn't usually move that far, especially before the famine.

My husband is from Oshkosh and his family also lived out on a farm (Vinland) in the early 1850's. Sounds like you have some good info on your family, but it would be helpful to know their townland in Cavan. Wondering if you've found the obituaries for the parents or kids? If they stayed in the Oshkosh, you might be able to find them in the Oshkosh Daily Northwestern archives at the library. It's been quite a few years since I did my research there, so I'm not sure about the current access to the microfilm. We were able to find a news article about his ancestor being a "pioneer farmer" from 1906. Good luck.

Just wanted to give an update to this... a couple years later. Frances' brother and sister listed Milltown and Killashandraas their birthplaces on a few records. We did visit those towns on a day trip from the Enniskillen area in 2013. We very much enjoyed the Killashandra Loop walking trail. .
