John George is thought to have been born in Armagh in 1819 but at some point moved to Rivory, Co. Cavan with his wife Martha Anderson.  John George died on Sept. 9, 1904 in Rivory, Co. Cavan and wife, Martha Anderson George died on Dec. 4, 1891 in Rivory, Co. Cavan.

John and Martha had the following children:
Margaret George, b. Oct. 19, 1854 in Rivory, Co. Cavan.
John George, b. about 1859 in Rivory, Co. Cavan.
Sarah George, b. May 1861 in Rivory, Co. Cavan
and Unnamed child born on July 7, 1865 – in Rivory, Co. Cavan – is there Belturbet?
Martha George, b. abt. 1853 in Rivory, Co. Cavan
   Elizabeth George, b. about 1846
   William George b?

I’m also trying to locate the sons of Esther & James Mitchell (I’d also like to locate info on Esther and James):

Esther and James Mitchell had the following children:

Alexander “Alex” Mitchell – born about 1820 in Cavan, Ireland. At some point he emigrated to Canada where he died on June 22, 1859.  He was married to Nancy Patterson who was born in 1834 in Brookboro, Fermanagh Co.

Archibald Mitchell – born about 1826 in Cavan, Ireland.  At some point he emigrated to Canada where he died on April 15, 1881 in Fenelon Falls Ontario.

I would gratefully appreciate connecting with anyone who can assist me in obtaining enough information so that I may obtain copies of the primary source documents and be able to identify where these places are so I might visit there in the future

  • Hello!

I think we have some information about Alex Mitchell and Nancy Patterson.

We are the Mitchell family from Toronto, Ontario and related to Alex Mitchell. He is our great, great grandfather. Alex had two sons and one daughter with Nancy Patterson between 1854 and 1859. He died on June 22, 1859, at the age of 39, and was buried in Bowmanville, Ontario. His son, James Mitchell was born in 1856 in Ontario and married Franklin Bland. James Mitchell is our great grandfather. The family still lives in Toronto and some now in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

We have more information if you'd like to connect (we are also on Ancestry.ca but could not find more info there). It would be great to know more about our Irish roots in Cavan!

  • Hello Sam Mitchell

Thank you so much for your message.  I'd be very interested on connecting with you and possibly sharing information.  I'm also on Ancestry - mtaggart1951 and would like to share my tree with you and would appreciate access to your tree.  If you give me your email address I can send you the invite to my tree.  My email address is mtaggs51@gmail.com

I am currently in Prague, CZ until the end of May 2022 when I will return to Cambridge, Ontario.  At the moment I have some technical difficulties with syncing my data between the computers in Prague and Cambridge but I hope to have this resolved soon.

I look forward to hear back from you.

  • Taggs51,

I cannot help directly, as I have no information, but searches do prove you could be very correct.  Rootsireland advises that there were two  John Georges born in Co Armagh between 1814 and 1824.  More importantly, and this may be the proof you seek, if you look at the Census of Ireland for 1901, you will find that John was alive and well, as you already know in that year, and his entry does confirm his birth as being Co Armagh.

  • I have recognised another problem that you may have to deal with, when tracing the background of John George.  The Tithes of Ireland indicate that, in the 1820s, there was not one George family in Armagh, which had to pay the tax.  There were 111 instances of Georges paying the tax, but predominantly they were outside of the northern counties.  As I have said, it looks as though there were actually two JOHN GEORGES born in Armagh around this time and I cannot offer an explanation for this apparent contradiction.   Another piece of the puzzle,  IF YOU CHECK THE 1911 Census of Ireland, you will find that there were possibly only two GEORGE FAMILIES in CO Cavan, one of which was living in RIVORY.

  • Here is the William George of the 1911 Census record   : https://www.geni.com/people/William-George/6000000107284973479

If you copy and paste the https line into Google and search, you will be able to read all information.

  • Margaret,

Some more for you to consider.  It now looks as though I might have sent you to your own listing. However, I do not always analyse what I am finding, when making notes, as on this occasion.  I spent some time playing around with John's family a while ago.  Ireand's records are not complete, as so many of them have been destroyed.  However, I have looked at a couple and thought I should advise you.  I can guarantee nothing.

    John  George 1819   Armagh  = 2   (years returned 1820 +1821)

    William George born Armagh    1847

    Martha 1849 definitely  Co Derry?????

    Margaret George 185                            antrim = 1 ??1852  1847

    John George  1854-1864 =             4            armagh 1  1862        cavan = 0         antrim = 1            Down = 1

Not all of these fit in with the family profile, so they are not relevant or something else is at play.

You ask another question   Belturbet is a town in County Cavan, Ireland. It lies on the N3 road, around 14 km (8.7 mi) north of Cavan town and 123 km (76 mi) from Dublin.   This looks as though it is about twice as far from Cavan (Town) as Rivory and about 3-4 miles north of Rivory.

If it is all right,  I will now stop searches, as I have probably been able to solve the difficulty that reading your message has presented for me.
