I am trying to find information on Mary Rahill, daughter of John Rahill and Mary Hamilton. Born  about 1844 in Co Cavan. She was an early settler in New Zealand and married in NZ in 1866. She may have had a niece..an Elizabeth Rahill born 1873 in Co Cavan, who then emigrated to NZ and was living in the same area of Otago,NZ, SMary also may have had a nephew Patrick who came to NZ as a child.

I have been unable to find any info on her parents, and wondered if  Hamilton was a common surname in !9 th century Ireland.

I have been unable to find anything about Mary in Ireland, and would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

  • Hi Brigid

There is a baptism record of Mary Rahill with parents John & Mary 1844 Cavan on www.rootsireland.ie/

There is a cost to view the full record but it will have the parish.

    I searched 1844 + - 20 years for siblings with the same parents and got Anne 1844 Mary 1841 & William 1830

I couldn't find a record of her parents' marriage

In the Tithe Applotments 1823-42 (free online) there are 54 Rahills in Cavan including 5 Johns

  • You asked whether Hamilton was a common name in 19th century Ireland. In the 1901 census there were 8091 people of that name of whom 91 lived in Co Cavan.

  • Mary Rahill

My husband is descended from Mary Rahill, daughter of John Rahill and Mary Hamilton. She married  James Reeves in New Zealand c1866; and after he died in an accident a few years later she then married George Wilkinson. There were a number of children from the marriages. Mary's sister in law Bridget also came to NZ a bit later with several children, including  a Patrick and an Elizabeth. I have some information on the family including a photo of Mary, please contact me if you are still looking ... I realise this is an old post!

    Kind regards

    Sharon
