John Smyth (born abt 1775) and Mathida Martha McCabe (born abt 1775) left Cavan (not sure where abouts) abt 1832 to Ontario, Canada.

Their daughter Elizabeth Smyth who married Robert E. Doyle (orginally from Waterford) married in Ontario. They would eventually move to Iowa..etc..

Since this is all of the information I have I have no idea who I am related to in Cavan. If this rings a bell with a relative, just let me know.

My online genealogy site (which I really don't have much information going into Ireland at all)

  • Hi there,

Thank you very much for your message to Ireland Reaching Out. You would really need a few more details in order to progress the research further here. Although, there is a chance that someone in the County Cavan could be related to you and will hopefully get back to you. If you have any details such as a more exact location or dates, pleasse let me know and I will try to help you as best I can.

Perhaps you can check for mre details (such as immigration records) in Canada?

Thank you for your interest in Ireland Reaching Out!

    Kind regards,

  • Yes, I am not sure how to search the imigration records up there, but that is a good idea.  I do not have an exact location unfortunately.

I don't have any other information on this family and not even knowing any of the closer relatives in Canda either.  I've put up their childrens names online and I've never heard from anyone.

I guess it is possible that there are Christening records but I have no idea of where to start.

  • Hi Mairin,

You could try looking in the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) for Matilda or her children. You may not have an exact location, but it might still be worth checking.

Also try checking the Spinning-Wheel Premium List. There are about 2,400 names for County Cavan. Her parents might be listed on it.

1796: Spinning Wheel Premium Entitlement Lists This was part of a government scheme to encourage the linen trade, free spinning wheels or looms were granted to individuals planting a certain area of land with flax.

The lists of those entitled to the awards, covering almost 60,000 individuals, were published in 1796, and record only the names of the individuals and the civil parish in which they lived. The majority, were in Ulster, but some names appear from every county except Dublin and Wicklow. A microfiche index to the lists is available in the National Archives, and in PRONI.

  • Hi there,

Could you start a new message thread with this query? Please post it here (Cootehill):  http://www.irelandxo.com/group/drumgoon-cavan

Could you include any dates that you know and include as much information that you know. This will help both me and the people in the local community to answer you questions.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney
