Do you know any more about William? Did he have any siblings that you know of, what were his parents? names? I had a look on rootsireland.ie but didn?t see a baptism for a William in Cavan for that period.

There are no McElwain entries on the Griffith?s Valuation (1837-1864). Are there any other sources on your side that could provide a parish name or other information?

I have just checked the Flax Growers? List for 1796 to see if there were any McElwain entries there but there are none. All of this leaves me to wonder if the McElwains were baptised in a parish that predates parish records. If the family were Church of Ireland there are actually only  a handful where records are available for those times.

There are a lot of McElwain messages on the forum at this site below; it may take some time to go through them but you may find something useful there as the parish records seem to leave us empty-handed:
