Peter Reilly was likely born in the 1840s in Ireland as was Mary Anderson (Mary's father Patrick Anderson).  They married in Ireland and had a daughter Catherine Reilly born 18 Nov 1863.  Catherine emigrated bet. 1880-1886 to New York and married Andrew Wallace (Anders Wahlback/ Wallis)from Sweden.   Andrew and Catherine had a daughter May or Marie Wallace 24th of Jun 1886 in Brookliyn, NY.   Mary Anderson Reilly emigrated to NY also but don't know when.   Presumably Peter was dead by that time.    I've been unable to find any Irish records on these Reilly / Anderson,  Mary and Catherine were buried in a Catholic cemetery in Brooklyn, NY.

I understand that Reilly is a common name in Cavan.  Would appreciate any suggestions.  Are there Irish Emigration records for the period 1880-1886?    Such common names and yet I can not find a marriage for a Peter Reilly and a Mary Anderson prior to 1864 (within the time frame of Catherines birth).

Thanks for any help, Elizabeth

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I was unable to locate the 1863 baptismal record for Catherine. Do you have a copy of the record or was the date on USA census records or other documents. There are five RC parishes in Cavan that do not have records back to 1863. ( I also did not locate the marriage record).Likely your ancestors were from one of thos parishes. You will not find Irish emigration records. Your best bet would be to look for records for Castle Garden whch was the receiving point in NYC before Ellis Island opened in 1892.

There are many Peter Reilly death index records in Cavan from 1864 on. At the present time, the Irish government has the images of death records available from 1891 on  at www.irishgenealogy.ie   They plan to add the images for deaths from 1864-1890 at some point. When these additional records are released you could possibly go thru the records to see if you can identify your ancestor.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Thank you Roger McDonnell,  I am a female. I've had my DNA tested and uploaded to Gedmatch.  My Gedmatch  Kit is A491528  That being said I don't know exactly what to do with the information.  I would very much like to visit Ireland but am waiting to find where my ancestors are from.

    Best Regards, Elizabeth

I also have had my DNA tested and my data is on Gedmatch T690844  What I do is email my closest matches and try to determine where the connection is. I have also had some older relatives on my paternal and maternal sides take the test which helps in determining whether a match is maternal or paternal.
