  • The tithes for 1826 list a John Magauran in Balinagauran. John’s father perhaps?

Griffiths Valuation for 1857 lists a Bridget McGovern on plot 7 in Ballymagauran. Porbably a widow. So perhaps his mother?

No McGovern households in the townland by 1901:

Wikipedia says he was from Tullyhaw, though I don’t see a townland of that name in the parish:

  • Thank You so much.

John McGovern is my great great grandfather, he imigrated to Canada in the 1860's.  We will be in Ireland in a couple of weeks where I plan on visiting Templeport to see where he was born.  I did read one article tht said he was from Tullyhaw but our family records have him from Templeport.

  • Templeport is a parish. That’s quite a big area. What you need is to know which townland within the parish he came from. So there is a townland of Ballymagauran (Balinagauran in 1826) that did have a Magauran household for part of the 1800s. So that’s one option, and since there doesn’t appear to be a townland of Tullyhaw it might be your only option. However ask in the local studies section at the library and you might get better advice:

They might even have some references to your ancestor.

McGauran and McGovern are interchangeable. It’s the same surname.
