My great grandparents - to the best of my knowledge and with the help of Griffith's and a baptismal record (microfilm, National Library, Dublin) - were Hugh Kiernan and Catherine Dolan of Corrachomera (?), Bawnboy, Templeport, Cavan. My grandfather, Hugh, was baptized on 7 December 1871 in the parish church of Killesher, Diocese of Kilmore. His godparents were Luke and Bridget Dolan. Hugh, who left for New York City in May 1893, may have had a brother named, John. Hugh married Mary McKiernan of Carrigallen, Leitrim in NYC some time before 1911 (?). Hugh was naturalized in 1913 and a John Kiernan was one of the witnesses on his appplication. Hugh and Mary had 8 children, only 4 of whom survived infancy: John, Elizabeth, Thomas and Kathleen. They lived in various places in Harlem and Manhattanville. Hugh died in February 1936 and Mary in June 1936. They and their 4 infant children (Hugh, Ellen and the twins, Mary and Bridget) are buried in Calvary Cemetery, Queens. John Peter Kiernan (1914-2004) was my father.

  • hi John

There is a baptism record of Hugh Kiernan in Cavan  1 Nov1867 on www.rootsireland.ie/ (subscription site)

The parish is  Killeshandra R C. There were none in killesher

Parents: Patrick & Rose; sponsors Hugh Monahan & Catherine Mulligan.

I looked for John but none in Killesher; those in Killeshandra had different parents to Hugh!

  • John:

Corrachomera is the correct spelling for the townland. I checked the 1901 census and there were 6 Dolan families living in the townland but no John as head of household.

I looked for a marriage record for Hugh and Catherine before 1871 but  did not locate a record.
