Hey there,

My great great grandmother was Anna McDermot.

She immigrated in 1861. Family tradition asserts that she came from Ballyconnell.

Her marriage record gives her parents as Francis and Mary McDermot.

Possible brothers are Bernard and Frank McDermott who also immigrated, all ending up in Wisconsin. Both of their marriage records also list Frank and Mary McDermot as parents.

A Francis McDermot is listed in Griffiths and in Tithe Applotment in Gurteen, Templeport. Francis and Mary Reilly McDermot had several children there, including an Anna.

The problem is that the Bernard in the parish records as born to them is listed as born in 1839, too late for him to have had the children, age 10 and under, listed with him in the 1860 US census.

That said, one of Francis McDermot 's (the other possible brother of Anna) daughters, Catherine, listed "Gurthen" as their father's birthplace on her sister's death certificate.

So close, but just can't be sure.

    Hi Steve,

    Thank you for your message.

Where did you see the parish record for Bernard?s birth? I wonder is it possible that if it is a written copy that the date may have been transcribed wrong, or maybe the copy you saw was unclear?

It may be an idea to write to the parish priest for possible assistance to see if the original parish record can be found.

Was there an age recorded for the Bernard in the 1860 census record? Perhaps if you can find a date of birth for this Bernard it may help you establish whether it is the Bernard in the parish records in Templeport. Possible places you could find this include marriage/death certs or immigration records. For information on immigration records check the US National Archives at  http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/

I hope that you are able to verify this information-everything else does seem to fit.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Steve,

Am not sure whether you have searched this site-: www.bawnboy.com/local-genealogy/baptisms 1836-1902. This is a fantastic site and more names have been addd to it recently. I found Eleanor, Rose, Bernard, Anne and Francis McDermott along with the name of their parents and baptism dates and sponsors. The sponsors are usually a close relative so these may help also. Check out this site!
