Mary & Denis were probably married in either St Joseph’s Miltown Malbay or St Mary’s Mullagh abt. 1830/31 – lived Dunsallagh East on McNamara farm. (I haven't been able to find reference to their marriage.)

Chn. of Mary & Denis: 6 daughters listed under births/baptisms for Parish of Miltown Malbay (source u/k)

“DUNSALLAGH” stamped across the page.

1836 (PG. 119)....Eveline

1838 (PG. 153)....Elizabeth

1840 (PG. 208)....Mary

A son, Thomas, (1830/31- 1881) not listed on the above page but was known to have remained in Ireland & married Ellen GRIFFIN (? – 1896). The eldest of their 9 children, Thomas, b. abt. 1854-57, married abt. 1894 Mary TALTY b. abt. 1871 & had 9 chn.

I have been unable to locate any information regarding Bridget’s sisters – Bridget being my gg grandmother -  or the date & place of the deaths of Mary & Denis.

Any help regarding this family would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Just to clarify, the townland would be Doonsallagh East in Kilmurry (Ibrickan) civil parish. This parish is just to the south of Kilfarboy parish. Here is the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilmurry (Ibrickan) parish and you can see Denis in Doonsallagh East.

I don't think the marriage record is available. I located two possible civil death index records for Denis.

  • Thank you very much Roger for your welcome & for setting me straight about the parish.

Since Denis obviously had many descendants, through his son, Thomas, maybe someone will be able to provide some information about his sisters. I remain hopeful.

    Best wishes,

I did some further analysis of the registration district for Doonsallagh East and Kilrush is incorrect. it should be Ennistymon. Unfortunately, I don't see any civil death index records for a Denis McNamara in that registration district. Possibly he died before 1864 when civil registration for deaths started.

Regarding marriages for the daughters plus Thomas, you could search the parish register for Milltown Milbay and Kilmurry Ibrickan. The fact that the family surname is McNamara complicates your search. Also there is a gap in the marriage records for Kilmurry Ibrickan from 1852 -1863 when many of the daughters/Thomas could have gotten married.

  • Thank you Roger - I've been trying with very modest success. Thee parishes have me stumped.

You say that the name McNamara complicates the search. Why does it - above any other name?

    All the best,

  • My comment was related to that fact that there were so many McNamaras in Co. Clare. McMahon is another very common surname.

  • This thread I know was 2 years ago now, but I'm grasping at straws that there may be more info available in 2019.

Denis McNamara & Mary O'Brien are also my 3 x Grt Grandparents, their daughter Bridget who married James Larkin in Australia in 1865, my 2 x Grt Grandmother.

I've been questioning whether Denis & Mary may have come to Australia as well, as there's really next to zero information on them in Ireland after their children were born.  Plenty of Denis Macnamara's pop up though.  Bridget stated her Mother was Mary O'Brien on her own childrens marriages.  Yes, the complication of both names being so popular around Co Clare makes this journey difficult.

If anyone has any information to add, I'd so appreciate it.

    Thanks, Charmaine Moss (Australia).
