I have been to Milton Malbay and met the Cleary relatives but I am chasing information on Anthony Cleary B:1807 died:1897. He married Bridget McMahon B:1810 died 1895. I do nt have a marriage certificate also do not have any information who her parents were. I would also like to know who Anthony parents were and if he had any brothers and sisters. There were six Cleary houses on the farm at Illaun but we do not know if they were related to us. I hope someone can give some information please

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Here is a link to the online RC parish register for Kilfarboy RC church. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0788  Baptismal records start in 1831 and marriages in 1856. Civil registration did not start until 1864. Anthony and siblings would have been baptized before 1831 and I assume his marriage occurred before 1856 so you may not find any info on them but possibly you can find baptismal records for their children.

The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilfarboy civil parish does show Anthony and two other Cleary records in Illaun. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/clare/kilfarboy.htm

You may also want to check the 1901 and 1911 censuses for Illaun.

  • Hi Rodger

Thank you very much for the information on the registers. What I am trying to understand is if the other Clearys living at Illaun would they be relatives to Anthony.I have traced from Anthony & Bridget right up to today his whole famliy.

    Regards

Likely they were related but very difficult to prove. Are you in contact with the Cleary relatives? Are they descendants of James, Thomas or Martin in the Griffiths? Have you considered autosomal DNA testing. You can also look into the Y-DNA test since you are a Cleary. I located three Cleary families in the 1901 census in Illaun. The first family has an 80 year old Martin who is likely the Martin in the Griffiths.

  • Hello!  I was recently in Miltown, and visited Cleary's Pub, and didn't realize my 3rd great grandfather, Michael Dwyer was born in Miltown Malbay in 1803, and was the son of Patrick Dwyer and Mary Cleary, both of whom I have not been able to find any more information.  If anyone has information to share, I would be appreciative.

    Thank you,

    Michael
