Hi,

I am wondering if the Reaching Out program may be able to help me with a localised search for my confirmed ancestor Den(n)is McMahon, B 1820 Through rootsireland..com.ire, I have identified such a name as from Cratloe b 1820, His parents names on the ships indent arrival in Sydney NSW 1840 were Denis and Honorah although the Cratloe BDM suggest Daniel and Margaret Frost.

Any help would be appreciated,

Regards Jane nee McMahon

  • Dear Jane

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in replying to your message.

Cratloe is a place name in two parts of Co. Clare. As you can see from the link below, Cratloe is in the Civil Parishes of Kilfintinan and Killeely:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/placenames/index.cfm?fuseaction=Simple&UserID=

Records for the corresponding Roman Catholic Parish of Cratloe begin in 1802 and Parteen and Meelick begin in 1831 for baptisms and 1814 for marriages. Have you already searched some of the sites below for further information?

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

Other important sources include the Tithe Applotment Books and Griffith?s Valuation:

Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Best of luck with your search

  • I also have relatives from Cratloe. Michael McMahon born 1815 Cratloe married Eliza Raleigh.  Found his birth on roots Ireland parents listed as Matthew McMahon and Maria Shanessy. I know he was a stone mason and Michael s son James moved to Tralee and married Jane Ryan. Not sure if same McMahons

  • Hi Grainne,

I have new information re my Denis McMahan  b @1819, (most likely from the Carigaholt area). His mother has been identified as Hannah (Honorah?) Obrien. and Father Denis McMahon. Denis jnr married Bridget Cahill about 1838/39 in Tarmon. They had a daughter Lucy b @1839. They left for NSW Australia in 1840. Denis and Bridget both died in 1867,  in NSW Australia.

I note from tithe applotment records that there were both a Michael and a Denis registered as "having" land in the Carrigaholt area during the 1820'/30's. Possibly father and uncle. So my new search area is Carrigaholt. Any information would be appreciated.Thankyou for your reply

    Cheers Jane

  • Hi  Grainne, I just seen your name the other day on the Heritage site but couldn't reply as not a premium member and these McMahon's I believe are GGGGrandparents on my hubby side , a second cousin Brian gave me the info of Micahel McMahon and Eliza Raleigh.  Funny thing today  he is meeting up with Ryan's from USA and is having a wee gathering in Dublin with the McMahon cousins. Sent you an email though this site and hope you got it okay.   Thanks   Rita
