in my quest to find out more about my birth mother Christina, born 1920, father ? Patrick Madigan I have found her sister Mary Christina, in UK  census 1940's working at Springfield Hospital, London. Then later married to Savvas Kyriacou, still living in UK. They may have had a daughter called Elaine S Kyriacou in 1947. Still in London in 1965, cannot find them after this date. In one of the census entries there is a Thomas Madigan, I presume he is a brother. Would be wonderful,if I can follow this line of the family.

  • Hello Jan,

I searched rootsireland.ie for your relatives but had no luck as the Co Clare records cut off at 1900.  However when I searched ancestry I found the following information on the birth index for Ireland.

    Christina Madigan

    1922  Oct- Dec

    Registration District.   Kilrush

    Volume 4

    Page 210

    Mary Christina Madigan

    1915  Oct - Dec

    Registration District.   Kilrush

    Volume 4

    Page 224

If you go to the website of the General Registry Office of Ireland then you can follow the online instructions on how to order the birth certificates.  You can do this online or by post.

I hope this brings you further along in your search,

    Kind regards,

    Anne Dennehy

  • Mary married to

Hi Anne, thank you for your reply, have also seen these entries on Ancestry. I am trying to tie the names of Mary Christiana with a brother Thomas, then would order some certificates. It really is a mystery and I got very excited when I found Mary married to Kyriacou, thought that would be an easy name to track, not the case. It seems as if my birth mother and her sister just appear in UK in the forties.

    Thanks again Jan

  • Hi Jan,

I believe these are your ancestors.  It was very common for Irish people to cross the sea and find work in Britain.  Unfortunately no records were kept at exit or entry ports so it's pointless trying to look for them on any passenger lists.

You should get the civil certificates and then write to the relevan churches for their baptismal records.  These might contain another snippet of information.

    Kind regards,

    Anne

  • Hi Anne, got online form, but there is no where to put folio or page number, am not sure if name, month, and year of birth would be enough. It's  $30 + to get them, so want to be sure Jan

  • Hi Veronica,

All I can suggest is to give the office a ring and ask this question.  There is always the option of doing things by post.  that way you can include all of the information.  However I feel that they will have enough information on the name, year quarter and place of registration.
