My Great great grandfather came from Killard I think - Dunmore is documented on the 1891 census but we think that it may be Doonmore. He was born in either 1839 or 1840. He enlisted in Cork in 1858 aged 19 yrs. He was posted to Canada where I think he married. His wife was called Mary Anne Dowling. They had four children all born in barracks - Canada, Jersey and Lancashire. William Edward, Ellen, Lizzie and Thomas Dowling. He was in the 47th Regiment of Foot. He spent some time in hospital at Athlone and then to Dublin. He was discharged from Preston Barracks in 1880. He then lived in Lancashire working as a Watchman on the railways. I think by this time Mary Anne had passed away and he has remarried a Kate/Catherine - I think Keane - also from this area. They have one daughter Margaret (in the photo) Any information on the family would be really appreciated.

  • Martin’s marriage to Catherine Keane was on 20.10.1878 in Rathdown registration district, Co Dublin:

There’s a possible birth cert for their daughter Margaret (aged 9 in the 1891 census) in Oldham, Lancs, July – Sept 1882 Volume 8d, page 590. That census also indicates that both Martin & Catherine came from the same place in Co. Clare.

  • I think we might share a common ancestor. My maternal grandmother was Gertrude Conway (1901-1950). She married Joseph Scarboro (nee Dunhill) and my mother, Doreen, was one of 7 children. I have Gertrude as the daughter of Mary Jane (Woodhams?) and William (Edward ?) Conway, a Canadian, who apparently returned to Fleetwood. I have William Edward as a son of Martin Conway (b ~1837 in Dunmore Co Clare) and Mary Anne Dowling, with siblings Elizabeth (b 1862 and Mary Ellen (1863-1946) born in Montreal, and Thomas Dowling (why not Conway?, 1872-1941) born in Toronto?. I researched this a good 10+ years ago and have only just returned to iron out/confirm details after my Mom just passed away. Any help/guidance would be appreciated.

  • Hello,

My grandmother was Emily Gertrude Conway - but she was born in 1900. Her father (my great grandfather) was indeed William Edward and he was born in Canada and her mother was Mary Jane Woodhams. Sisters Elizabeth and Mary Ellen were born there too. Martin was in the British Army 47th Regiment of Foot. Thomas Dowling Conway was born in Fleetwood UK - there were army barracks. His middle name was Dowling as they had given him his mothers maiden name. Emily Gertrude (my grandmother) died in 1996.

The only other possibility - Thomas Dowling Conway (born 1872) married a Catherine Mary Long they had five children 4 boys and their only girl was called Constance. But I have not researched this family and have no dates.

I have looked to see if there were any other Gertrude Conways born around the same time but unfortunately no and the surnames Scaboro and Dunhill are not names I have come across. I don't know if there is a link further down the tree eg Martins family - I have very little early information on him really. I have been doing a bit more research and if I do find a link I will get back to you.

    All the best
