  • Hello Christine, Owen and Clare County Library

My name is Robyn Searle and I live in Victoria, Australia.  My great great grandfather was Francis Joseph Brew, ... son of William Henry Brew ... who was brother to George Brew whom married Mary Leacy.  I have WH and George Brew's parents as Francis Brew and Mary Casey.  They married in Killaloe, County Clare, in1822 and emigrated to Australia in 1854.  My research has been been done entirely by public records and probably open to errors and omissions.

I have used this website ...    The Brews of Victoria, Australia    https://www.mannincloud.info/Brew/brewvic3.htm.

and have recorded on familysearch    ......    https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/KZN4-7Y8

I hope information on familysearch is available to view and amend if necessary.

I would be very happy for any shared information.

    Best Wishes

    Robyn

  • Hi Robyn

Great to hear from you, I have had a quick look at what you have recorded on familysearch and it seems we have different George Brews in our family trees. Over the last week or so I have been looking through Trove for all mention of George Brew in Victoria and kept reading articles about the George Brew in Wangaratta.

George William Brew was apparently born somewhere in Co Clare around 1844, he came out to Australia by himself in 1860 and would have been around 16 years of age. It is possible that there were other family already over here either brothers, sisters or cousins. His marriage certificate states that his parents were a George Brew and Mary Pine

He Married Mary Margaret Fahey in Clunes in 1875 but I suspect they had been living together before that.  They had six children

Eugene Richard born in 1876, Margaret Mary Born 1878, Annie Jane born 1880, Daniel George born 1882, William Bertram born 1885 and Ellen Josephine born 1890

The Family lived in Warrenheip, just outside of Ballarat until their house burned down.  They then moved into central Ballarat. For a number of reasons the family broke up around 1887, there is the occasional mention of him in the local paper up to 1898 and then he disappears.

I am a descendent of the oldest son Eugene Richard Brew. I am happy to share what information that I have if it is of interest.

    Regards

  • Owen,

Subscription site - www.rootsireland.ie  has a record of the following: Francis Brew baptised in the parish of Tubber 1835.

Father: Thomas Brew - Mother: Mary Pyne. Address: Castle Quarter, Tubber, Co. Clare.

Susan Brew - Baptism 1840- Tubber Parish: Father: Thomas Brew - Mother: Margaret Pyne.

Michael Brew - Baptised - Tubber 1843. Father: Thomas Brew - Mother: Margaret Pyne.

Those records are transcribed and it would be necessary to see the original records to clarify whether Mary or Margaret is the correct name for those children.

    Regards,
