I am looking to find what parish James Cobey may have come from?  He was born possibly 1834-1835.  I do not know the year of emmigration, but he was in the States by 1860.  His father may have been Owen Cobey.

Most appreciative of any information and assistance.  Thank you.

  • Hi there,

Cobey is an unusual name, so hopefully someone in the County Clare area will recognise it and be able to help you out. I have done a check, and there was one Cobey family in County Clare during the time the land records called Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) was carried out.

It is very difficult to carry out research without at least having some idea of the location your ancestor originated.

Here is a very useful website you could take a look at: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/genealog.htm

Perhaps you could find more information from the death notices in the local newspapers from that period? You might be able to find out the parish or next of kin, etc.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

  • I wonder if COBEY could be the same name as KIRBY for the root family, but with a variant spelling from days when literacy was not well-established? The two names certainly sound alike.

My father was MICHAEL Francis Patrick KIRBY, and was in Killaloe in County Clare for a while in the 1920s. Perhaps there is a link to a KIRBY family there?

  • Hi there,

As I previously mentioned, here is the detail for the one Cobey family mentioned in Griffith's Valuation: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&familyname=cobey&firstname=First+Name&baronyname=&countyname=&unionname=&parishname=&Submit.x=55&Submit.y=19

There are other variants known: Coboy and McCobey. Like Cobey, there was only one McCobey (in Co. Down) during the time of Griffith's Valuation.

I don't know for certain, but I don't think that Kirby and Cobey were the same name.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead
