Hi Marg,

Great asked the to hear from you.

Mary Canny was my Great Great Grandmother, and was married to Thady Malone. As of now, I have no details on their parents but I hope to have this information next month as I have asked the Clare Roots organisation to do soem research on my Clare family, both Hannon and Malone. When I have the results of this research, I will share with you.

I dont know anything about Hannah Boland's family, but will keep checking.

I have had contact with Pauline Curby recently, as prior to this contact, i was entirely unaware that I had relatives in Australia!! I knew of the existence of Owen Malone from the incription on the gravestone at Moynoe, but had no idea what had become of him. I was very pleased to see that he had made a good life for himself.

I am trying to establish what happened to the rest of the siblings, and assume that they emigrated or died prematurely.

I might mention that Pauline Curby visited Scariff some years ago and met my father and uncle. They were photographed out the old derelict dwelling (since demolished due to health and safety concerns).

The current house was built by Tim Malone (my grand uncle) in 1929. I inherited the house and land on the death of Jackie Hannon (my uncle) in 2013 and had the house renovated. As I have lived in Dublin for most of my life, we use it as a holiday home and rent out the land to a local farmer.

If and when I have anything further, I will be in touch and hope that perhaps some day you may be able to visit Carrowmore.

All the best

John

  • Hi John,

My great grandfather was Patrick Malone (wife: Bridget Minogue). Thady Malone & Mary Canny appear as sponsors @ my grandmother, Margaret Malone's (Patrick & Bridget's daughter) baptizm. The link for this record is:  https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634765#page/16/mode/1up

I believe Thady is also Timothy in some records. For example you can find Patrick Malone and Timothy Malone in Grifiths Valuation on side-by-side lots in Carrowmore.  Presently I am woring on the premise that Patrick & Timothy/Thady are brothers but I have yet to find anything that confirms this to be a matter-of-fact.

Patrick had 5 children that I am aware of: Bridget/1854, Ann/1857, Margaret/1860, Peter/1866, Kate/1871. Margaret (my grandmother) came to USA, Fitchburg, Massachusetts in 1885 and was follwed by sister Kate in 1891. The others to the best of my knowledge stayed in Ireland, Both Ann and Bridget later had children, most which came to Fitchburg.

  • Dear all

In an earlier post by James McNamara, he reported a child of Thady Malone and Mary Canny, namely Edward born 7th of July 1861.  Sponsors Denis Minogue and Mary Grainan (sp?).. I checked the NLI and that looks correct.  The names Thady and Timothy are interchangeable.  (I'm no Irish scholar, but these are apparently alternates when the Irish name Tadhg was Angliscised).

According to the family tree of antsandkim on Ancestry, Denis Minogue was born late 1842 son of Darby Minogue (b 1818) and Bridget Malone (b 1822).  Its a well documented tree!  Darby and his young family emigrated to Australia 1851 and had some success prospecting gold. They also had a son Timothy born in Australia.  The family returned to Ireland and in 1856 purchased 25 Acres 2 Roods and 25 perches in Carrowmore from Denis O Callaghan.  A daughter Bridget born in 1856 has Patrick Molony and Margaret Malone as sponsors.

Similar to Thady/Timothy,  the name Darby is interchangeable with Jeremiah.   Is Bridget Malone sister to Thady Malone?  Seems like a good bet.   Darby died in Carromore 1874 and his wife Bridget in 1878.  Denis moved to New Zealand, while Timothy Minogue stayed in Carromore and married Bridget Minogue, daughter of David Minogue and Mary Thorton from Capparoe

  • Dear RMinogue:

Many thanks for your email and your comments about the interchangeable first names.  As you appear to have a good bit of information on the family, would you be willing to create an Ancestor profile for one of the Malone/Minogue families?  You can do so by clicking on the XO Chronicles tab at the top of this page.  The profiles are updated weekly, widely read by all member and they often lead to sharing and collaboration for further research.  If you have any questions, please let me know.  Kind regards,  Jane
