My Great grandmother Catherine O'Halloran came to Australia with her sister Mary in 1858.  She was the daughter of Charles O'Halloran and Eliza O'dwyer. Two of her uncles and an aunt had already made the trip to Australia before her, arriving in 1850. Any information about this family would be greatly appreciated.

  • HI:

I am the parish administrator for Tulla and I will do some quick research for you.  It may be another week before I get back to you with something. There are indeed O'Hallorans  (several families) that lived in the parish and that are still in the parish.   Many thanks for your interest in Reaching Out.

I will post my reply through the message board so please keep checking back.

  • Hi Jane,

I do have a fair bit of information on this family from the australian end, but some conflicting information about my great x2 grandfather (Charles') parents. So far I believe my great grandmother Catherine O'halloran was born in 1839 in Tulla ( I think it was formerla). I have baptism dates for all but one of the children of Charles and Eliza O'dwyer of which I have 8. The last child was James and I have no information about him.

I also have conflicting information about the parents of my great x2 grandfather Charles O'Halloran(the father of Catherine).I know two of his brothers and a sister came out to Australia in 1850 - they were Dennis, Michael and  Catherine. Denis' who I believe was born around 1820 has recorded with his death information parents names as Charles O'halloran and Mary O'brien. Michael I believe was born in about 1821 and on his death information his parents are given as Charles O'Halloran and Margaret Moloney. Their sister Catherine who I believe was born around 1819 has unknown  parents listed at death.  My great x2 grandfather did not leave Ireland and all I know of him is the date of his marriage to  Eliza O'dwyer ( whose parents were Jeremiah O'Dwyer and Elizabeth Farrell - this came form other researchers who kindly gave me the information) which was 10 Feb 1834. I do not know when he died or  which of the two previous mentioned sets of parents might be his, either Charles and Mary O'brien, or Charles and Margaret Moloney.

I would love to know a few more details about this family, although I know that information is very hard to find the further you go back with Irish research. I appreciate any help you may be able to give me and hope that the above details are not too confusing.  Thanks again for you help I will keep an eye out for any future messages.

    Cheers

  • Dear Josie:

I'm glad to hear that you have a good bit of information to go on.  I did a quick check last night in Griffith's Valuation and there are 2 families of Charles o'Halloran:  one in Doonaun townland and the other in Fomerla.  So that sounds correct with the Fomerla connection.

There are not any O'Hallorans that show up in either area in the 1901 Census so they probably all emigrated or passed away.

There is a Michael O'Halloran who appears in Fomerla townland in the Tithe Applotment Book.

You might check the website:  www.historicgraves.ie.  we have just completed a project scanning and recording the headstones in the Tulla graveyards.  The O'Halloran name is there, but the headstone may yet have to be transcribed.  It is worth checking and please check back as it is a work in progress with 4 acres of graves!

I will do some more checking around and get back to you in another week or so.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

  • Hi Josie:

I just wanted to bring your attention to an event that we are hosting this year:  our Tulla Weekend of the Welcomes which will take place from 9 - 12 August here in the parish.  We will be hosting genealogy, heritage and music events.  If you are planning on travelling here at that time, we would love to be able to meet with you and to show you around.  If however, you are not coming, or are coming at another time, we will still be happy to see you.

I am due to go into Fr. Martin next week and I will hopefully have some more information for you regarding the O'Hallorans.

Let me know if you have any travel plans for Ireland.

    All the best,

    Jane.

  • Hi Josie:

I have some information for you that will hopefully be of some help.

Charles Halloran married Eliza Dwyer on 10 February 1834 in Tulla.

    Their children were:

    1.  Mary 22 january 1835

    2. Pat 5 June 1837

    3.  Catherine April 1839

    4. Margaret March 1846

    5.  Eliza 18 May 1848

    6.  Hannah 3 September 1850

    7.  Anne 22 April 1853

You will note that there weren't any "O"s with either family.

I'm wondering if you knew if Charles' siblings were married in Ireland or Australia?

If so, I can try to trace them for you.

Let me know if you need any further info.

    Jane.

  • Hi Jane,

Thanks you so much for the information on the O'halloran's it confirms some of the dates I had.

It's really interesting that you say that there were no O's for either family.  I had found that the name O'halloran was sometimes given on documents etc here in Australia as just Halloran, but was not sure whether it was an error or whether they would give their name in either form as though it didn't matter.  Does that mean their original names would have been Halloran and Dwyer or was it common to just add or delete an O to an irish surname?

One of Charles' siblings did marry before coming to Australia and probably in Ireland. His wifes name was Mary McGrath and I believe her parents names were Denis McGrath and Anne Power.  I have not been able to locate anything regarding a marriage for them but it would have been before 1850.

I am wondering is there any possibility of finding information on the deaths of Charles or Eliza? Charles dies sometime before 1885 and Eliza after him.  I was also given information that Patrick O'Halloran/ halloran, Charles' son, married a Maggie O'Connell, but I have no dates for this either.

I am pretty sure Patrick died around July 1885 as there were some details I found online from the Limerick Will book 1883 - 1888  for a Patrick Halloran of Formerla refering to his sisters whose married names I had, and  two scanlon nephews, sons of Margaret O' / Halloran, who I knew were also the nephews of my great grandmother.

The information given was from p441 in the index   :  Patrick Halloran - Fomerla : wife and mother surviving, dated 17 Jul 1885, masses for late father and uncle in Tulla and Ennis Friary, 3 sisters, Mrs Healy, Mrs McNamara and Hanagh (Sr. Mary Clare).Nephew Patrick Scanlon, eldest son of Rodger Scanlon of Creevagh.John Scanlon second son of Rodger.

I am just curious to fill in the gaps in my research and would gratefully accept any information on where to look or what is available.

Thank you again for your help I really appreciate it.

    Cheers

  • Hi ?

Eliza's father was Jeremiah O'Dwyer and her mother was Elizabeth Farrell.

Are you connected to the O'Dwyers?
