I've been searching for many years for the County Cork location for a Patrick Lyons married to a Hanora McDonnell. I believe I have finally located them in Annakissy/Wallstown/Doneraile/Curraghanaltig. Here's what I know.

Patrick Lyons was born about 1810 in Ireland. His parents may have been William and Mary Margaret, if naming patterns were followed. Patrick married Hanora McDonnell before 1842. They had at least 5 children. William, Ellen, John, Mary, and Patrick Jr. all ended up in Chicago, along with the Patrick Sr. Hanora did not die in Chicago. Patrick Sr. died in Chicago on 1 May 1887. His gravestone says he was a "man from County Cork".

Baptismal records show a William Lyons born in April 1842 to Patrick and Hanora.and baptised at Ballydoyle. Ellen (baptized as Mary) was born in November 1844 and baptized at Killavullen. Mary (baptized as Margaret) was born in June 1847 and baptized at Killavullen. John was born in April 1851 and baptized at Killavullen. Patrick was born in December 1855 and baptized at Doneraile.

I've been looking at the Griffiths Valuation for this family. I believe the Patrick Lyons in Wallstown could be my husband's gg grandfather. Wallstown is near the other places I've seen listed for this family. .

What happened to Hanora McDonnell Lyons? Did Patrick Sr. have other children? I did see a Joanna Lyons baptized with Patrick as a father and a different mother.

I've been able to trace much of the US history of this family, but I really want to know when and why they left Ireland and what family might still remain.

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the very long delay in getting back to you.

Have you already looked at irishgenealogy.ie, a free site, to see if there are any records there relating  to the family?

    Best wishes

  • Hello,

I have looked as a great many Irish records and will be coming to Cork in June/July to further this research. I am taking a genealogy course at the University of Cork and then my daughter and I will be spending a week in Mallow to explore the area and see what we can find. I look forward to really getting to know the area.

    Thanks,

    Jennifer Lyons

  • Hi Jennifer

The closest match I can find for a baptism record for Patrick Lyons is a baptism on the 5th March 1817 in the townland of  Ballinslea in Doneraile co.Cork, only minutes away from Castletownroche. Parents are different , Thomas Lyons and Ann Clifford. I see what else I can find and get back to you

  • I couldn't find anything for Patrick either. His death record indicates be was born about 1805. Hanora McDonnell may be Hanora Donnel, baptised 14 June 1812 at Killavullen, daughter of John Donnel and Hanora Harold. The other option appears to be Hanora McDonnel, baptised 13 January 1822 at Doneraile, daughter of Mathew McDonnel and Johanna Fitzgerald.

I spent time looking at baptismal sponsors for the children: William, (Mary) Ellen, Mary (Margaret), John, and Patrick. Names in parentheses are how the girls were baptised. Sponsors were mostly not family members, although one was a Wiliam McDonnell. Another was a Mary Lyons.
