What I know about my grandparents:

Grandfather: Michael Sullivan, born 10/25/1870.  Could have come from Middle Mountain  or Ardfield, Clonakilty, County Cork

He emigrated to the USA through Boston in 1891 according to the US Census of 1900 and lived in Chicago, Illinois after a brief stay in Whiting, Indiana.

He had at least one brother, Timothy, who emigrated to the USA in 1893 (birth: December, 1869).

Grandmother: Mary Sullivan (also her maiden name), born 3.17.1871? in Ardfield, Clonakilty, County Cork.

She emigrated to the USA in 1890.

She had at least three sisters: Kate, Nell,(both emigrated to the USA)  and another sister who remained in Ireland.

They met and married in Chicago, Illinois in 1895.

My grandfather had a niece, Bridget McCarthy, who lived with them in Chicago at the time of the 1910 census.

I believe that a pub owner in Ardfield named Dermot Mahoney may be related to my grandmother.

I am planning a visit to Ireland in April/May and will be in Clonakilty in early May 2016 and would appreciate any information about the family, especially finding my great-grandparents' names and where they are buried.  Thank you.

  • My apologies for the very late response. Have you managed to learn anymore about these ancestors?

  • Thank you, Clare.  I am just getting back to check on this site. We have returned from our trip to Ireland which was fantastic. We spent a couple of days in Clonakilty and visited Ardfield where I met Ellen O'Mahoney, perhaps a distant relative, and she connected me to Tomas Tuipar in Clonakilty who has quite extensive research into the O'Sullivans of Ardfield. We were not able to make a definite connection but will stay in touch. So, I am still searching with my limited information and hopeful to find a link. Also, a cousin called me the night before we left to say that he thinks Michael Sullivan was born in Timoleague!  I have yet to pursue that line on inquiry. If you have any leads for me, I would be most thankful.

  • Hi again

I would love to hear more about your trip and it's great that you got to speak with a  your relative.

Records for Timoleague begin in 1842 for baptisms and 1843 for marriages. You should have a look on irishgenealogy.ie and rootsireland.ie to see if there is any record for the family

    All the best

  • Thank you, Clare and BernieC, for the additional information. From what I have been able to find, I am pretty confident that my grandfather, Michael Sullivan (O'Sullivan) was born in Timoleague on Oct. 25, 1870 to parents John Sullivan and Ellen Fitzgerald.  I believe his siblings include John DOB Dec. 4, 1865, Catherine DOB May 10, 1868, and Denis DOB May 27, 1873. I also found three other possible siblings of John Sullivan and Ellen Fitzgerald Sullivan but were born in Clogagh or Clogagh Kilmalode, Cork. They are: Jeremiah DOB Oct. 14, 1874, William DOB Feb. 2, 1877, and Andrew DOB Jan.12, 1880.  I also believe my great-grandparents were married June 18, 1859 in Timoleague.  My cousin tells me great-grandfather John was born  May 23, 1840 and great-grandmother Ellen Fitzgerald was born Dec. 7, 1841 in Macrom. I'm still looking to confirm this information. I have not had luck in finding more information on my grandmother, Mary Sullivan.  Also, have not been able to find any more information on Michael's brother, Timothy, who also emigrated to the US and married Mary's sister, Kate. According to a death certificate I found for Mary, her actual DOB was March 25, 1871. I will keep looking and appreciate any information you can add.  Thank you.
