I am looking for information on John Jennings and Catherine Dunne who were married in Ballymodan parish on Jan 14, 1816.

Is he the same John Jennings, farmer, who married Anne Wolfe,  widow, of Fort Roberts by licence, on Oct. 8, 1829, at St. Finbarre's, Cork City.

My gg grandfather, John Jennings had three daughters, Margaret, Ellen and Catherine (my great grandmother) and a son< Henry, born circa 1818 to 1825.

He later married Anne and had three more daughters. About 1837, John, Anne and all 6 girls immigrated to Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada, where all the girls married and raised families.  John died sometime between 1861 and 1871. Unfortunately no record of his death nor tombstone remains.

Henry remained in Ireland where he married Jane Morgan c.1831 on Feb. 26, 1848.  They had three sons, Robert, c. 1850; John, c.1854 and Henry, c. 1857 before immigrating to Saint John,  New Brunswick, Canada, where they had nine more chilsren including the eldest,Thomas c. 1855 and youngest, martha, c. 1874. When Henry died in Saint John, NB, 1877, his obituary said he was born in Drinagh, Ireland. After Henry's death, Jane moved with most of her children to live in Bathurst, where some of the children remained. Others returned to Saint John.

Did Henry's mother die when he was born?  If so was he brought up by someone else?  Was he actually born in Drinagh or was he taken there to live by a relative/guardian?

  • Hi,

Thank you very much for your message. I hope that someone with information on the family makes a connection with you and is able to give you some answers to your questions.

In the meantime, did you know that the Catholic records from Drinagh and Ballymodan are avaialbale online for you to search free of charge at http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/

Hopefully you may be able to find some records in here relating to the family.

Another useful website is the Irish TImes where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Ballymodan/Bandon follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Cork%20South-West&parish=Bandon&churchid=17

    For Drinagh/Drimoleague follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Cork%20South-West&parish=Drimoleague&churchid=46

Also, have you heard of the Tithe Applotment Books? These are a series of land records  compiled between 1823 and 1837 in order to determine the amount which occupiers of agricultural holdings should pay in tithes to the Church of Ireland. They offer no genealogical information but can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place. I did a search for John Jennings in Cork and the following results came back:

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=jennings&firstname=john&county=Cork&parish=&townland=&search=Search

Although there is no way of knowing whether this John is your John, it is quite possible as his son said he was from Drinagh and the date is also plausible seen as John did not emigrate until 1837. Perhaps the whole family lived in Drinagh before their emigration?

Some other websites that you may find useful are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

I hope some of this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

  • Hello, Perhaps I can help you.  My GGG grandfather is John Jennings 2nd marriage to Anne Wolfe 1929 who had Jane 1831-1914, Ann 1834-1901and Mary 1836-1915.  His first wife, Jane (McCalley??) and John had 3 children, Henry b1819-?, Margaret 1822-?, Ellen 1824-1893 and Catherine 1828-?.  John came to Canada approx 1848-1852,

Henry is my GG Grandfather.  John was born approx 1773-1781 and died in Bathurst NB about 1871. We know this because on later census records he is no longer tied to Anne and their borders. I am trying to locate the name of his first wife, Jane. On ancestry.com, one tree has a last name of mccalley and no date of birth or death.  I found only one mccalley lived from 1799-1850 but I cannot be sure this is her.

I am trying to discover the parents of John Jennings.  This is all the info I have on my father's side.  I hope this helps. Curious as to Fort Roberts. Is that a place?  Thank you.

  • It appears that we are looking for the same family   I do have a marriage recorded for a John Jennings and Catherine Dunne in Ballymoden Parish, January 14, 1816, but I haven't positively established that they are the couple I am researching. A birth record for any of the four children showing Catherine as the mother or a death record for a Cataherine Jennings would help to clarify it.

This is the first time I have heard of John's first wife referred to as Jane. Where did you find this info?

I believe John Jennings died between 1861 when he appeared in the census and 1864 when St. George's Anglican death records began, His death does not appear on those records, and Anne Is a widow in the 1871 census.  Henry's widow, Jane (Morgan) and some of their family from Saint John.are occupying the same household in 1881 but I have Anne's death as April 8, 1873. I have no record of where she may have lived in the interim.
