I know this is very vague but here goes.

My Mahony ancestors are said to have come from Bandon, Co. Cork. They were dispossesed of their lands at some point and are said to have moved to Connacht, I don't know this man's name or where he moved to, I just know that he was a horse soldier.

My ggg grandfather was Pat Mahony 1783-1875. I can not find a record of his birth and don't know his siblings or parents names. His wife was Catherine Cummings 1804-1884, no records for her either except for their death certs. They had 2 known children Timothy 1838-1897 and Catherine 1839-1927. The family ended up in the village of Cong on the Galway/Mayo boarder.

If a story about a horse soldier named Mahony being dispossesed of his lands and moving to Connacht sounds familliar, I'd love to hear from you. Or if anyone could reccomend local archives I could consult?

My GedMatch is DW2848025.

  • Have you searched for this family's records at RootsIreland? Looked for them in Griffith's Valuation?
Just a heads-up...sometimes family stories are just that, stories. The truth gets garbled over time, just like in the game of "telephone." If your ancestor was a soldier, that may account for his moving around. Also, if he was a soldier, you might want to look at British army records.
    I hope this helps.

  • Thank you, Patricia, Yes I've done all that. And I am aware that sometimes stories are just that, but given that Bandon was a garrison town, that Ireland was a highly militarised country and that many transplantations to Connacht occured during the Cromwellian plantations, I have a tendancy to believe that is true. Are there any military records of Bandon available?, or transplantation records?

  • I just saw this. I believe my 3rd great grandmother was Cataharine Mahony. She would have been born 1770 to 1800. She was married to Daniel Leary. Their son Jeremiah was born around 1819 in Desertserges I think. He came to USA in the late 1830s or early 1840s i think. I have not been able to connect Catharine to her parents but I think she was from near Bandon, Innishannon, or around that area. I think they moved around a bit. I have a tree I can share with you. My email is rsippos@gmail.com.

  • Hello, I have Maloneys or as some like to spell it Moloney, from Bandon.  Could anyone have a h instead of a l?

My 2nd Great Grandfather George Maloney was born in Bandon in 1801 Bandon d 1862 Merrickville Ontario Canada

emigrated sometime after 1830 and before 1839

My 3rd Great Grandfather George Maloney was born in Bandon in 1765 and died in 1830, possibly Bandon.

I see some people have John Maloney 1737 Bandon -1781 Bandon and Catrine 1741 Bandon - 1791 Bandon as his parents.

And Timothy Maloney 1700 Bandon - 1772 Bandon as John Maloneys father
