i am looking for any information about my ancestor John Butt born 1749 and came from Cork to Winchester Hampshire England in 1772 .  He was a bootmaker (cordwainer) by trade.  He may possibly have had a brother James born 1755 and THomas born 1760.  Just thought due to the Parish name that Butts may have originated here.  I understand records back this far may be difficult to find.

  • Thank you.  I have a death date for John Butt.  He died in 1841 In Winchester Hampshire England and is buried there in St. Giles Hill.  I believe he had 2 sons and 1 daughter.  William Butt born 23 July 1784 Winchester, died 03 Sept. 1851.  Ann Butt born 1800 Winchester and never married.  John Butt baptised at St. Maurice Winchester 27 Feb. 1790.  The men were bootmakers, cordwainers and that tradition followed several generations in the Winchester area.  I have not found any mention of a wife.
