Hello, I was told that my gg uncle, Denis Scanlan lived in the area with his wife and children. Denis was born in 1874 (in Hollyhill) to Denis Scanlan and Margaret Hegarty. Denis' first wife was Ellen Lannnin-Sullivan. When ellen diedm uncle Denis married Katie O'Leary and had children. I believe that one may went to Australia and another to England. Denis had a sister Mary (Scanlan) Spillaine. When Mary became older and widowed, she went to live with Katie in Caheragh.
I'm looking to try and determine the children of Denis and Katie O'Leary.
Thanks,
Annie

Dear Annie
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you!
I had a look on rootsireland.ie but couldn't find any baptism records for children born to Denis and Katie. You could have a look on irishgenealogy.ie where some records for Kerry and Cork are available to search for free:
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/
Let us know if you learn anything new
Best wishes

Hi Annie,
Its been a long time since you put your query in IrelandXO but I did not see it until last night.
A couple of questions on it and with answers, I may be able to help you. Do you have the information on the marriage of Denis an Ellen Sullivan? Is it oinly the children of Denis and Katie you are looking for? Do you know thge approximate year of Ellen Sullivan or the marriage year of Denis & Katie
Finally, do you have the siblings of Denis as if you have not, I have the record of their Baptisms.
Get back to me as soon as possible whike I have this information easily to hand. You can contact me through this Message Board or through frankfahy@eircom.net

Annie,
Further toi my last message, I have found the marriage of Denis to "Katie". I am certain it is the same people but her first name is not Katie on the marriage cert by Margaret and she was from Scarteenakillen Ballydehob. I will continue to look for their children.

Annie,
as Denis and Margaret married in 1938, records of their childrens birth or baptism are not available due to what is known as the "one hundred year rule" under which only direct relatives or persons with a legitimate reason for getting the information will be allowed a record search. This is to protect the privacy rights of the people recorded and possibly alive.
Copies of the other information I mentioned already is available to you when you reply including the siblings of Denis.

Thank you for the responses. Denis Scanlon (1874) my great grandfather, John Scanlon's (1863) younger brother was a mason. His first wife was Ellen Lannin-Sullivan. Ellin was marriied to a John Sullivan, the cousin of Denis. Ellen and John had 3 children: John, Julia and Daniel. When John passed-away, Denis married Ellen and they has a son Patrick Thomas (1901- 1974). Patrick eventually moved to Staten Island in NY.
Denis then married Margaret (Katie) O'Leary. They had children: John (1938), Margaret (1939), Martin (1941) and Denis (1945). I know that John is still in Co. Cork, I believe still in the area of Caheragh. I an curious as the what happened to the other children.
The parents of Denis were Denis and Margaret (Peggy) Hegarty. There children were: John (1863), Patrick (1864), Michael (1865-1947), Mary (1867-1955), Catherine (1868-1890), Ellen (1870), Margaret (1871), Hanora (1872- 1895), Denis (1874), Edward (1876), Bridget (1881) and possibly a Thomas.
All came to the USA except Patrick, Denis, Edward and Mary who maried a Spillaine and lived in Paddock.
Margaret Hegarty's parents were Patrick Hegarty and Catherine O'Brien.
Thank you,
Annie

Hi Annie,
Thank you for your reply.
I have continued to search for your Scanlon families but have found no more than yourself. I have also checked the local modern telephone directories to see if John Scanlon was listed in the Caheragh area and there is none. The only John Scanlon listed is in the Sheskin area of Bantry which would be about 10 - 12 miles from Caheragh. I also found a Noel Scanlon listed at Blackthorn Lodge, Bunalun, Skibbereen which would be about four miles from Caheragh Townland but in Caheragh Parish. Having said that, I can see no family link between the Scanlons of Aughadown and Scanlans of Caheragh but you may know of some link between them other than the name.
As regards the chikldren of Denis and Margaret (Katie) O'Leary, they, as I said in my previous reply, are from an era when details of their birth and marriage etc are only available to relatives with legitimate reason to get them and all enquiries/certificates must be paid for. Detail can be had from the Registrar, Civill Registration Offices, HSE. Coolnagurrane, Skibbereen, County Cork.
I am sorry that I cannot be of more help to you but you seem to have been quite successful with your own efforts and I hope you can progress further. Please let me know if there is anything further I can do for you and I will be happy to help if I can.
