I am trying to find out about my great grandfather Dennis Daly. The only information I have is the 1881 English census where he is living in Harwich, Essex with his wife and two children. The entry shows that the name Thomas was originally written but is crossed out and replaced with the name of  'Dennis'  which matches the name used on his marriage certificate. He gives his age as 44 (born c.1837) and his place of birth as Carricleul, Cork. His occupation is pensioner. Having searched for a Carricleul in County Cork with no luck I realised that the census enumerator had a handwriting habit of not crossing his 't's. In which case Carricleul could be Carricteul or, taken an English numerator relying on information provided in an Irish accent, as Carrigtohill.

On his English marriage certificate in 1876 his occupation is given as soldier. His father is given as Dennis Daly and occupation as shepherd.

His wife was: Emma Carrington born 1851 in Essex
He had four children : Emma, Walter, Dennis, Charles.

His wife died in the Tendring workhouse in 1888.
His daughter Emma and son Walter subsequently were sent to Canada as home children.
My grandather Dennis ran away to sea but remaind for the rest of his life living in England. He initially changed his name and called himself 'Thomas' changing it back to Dennis when he was of age and adding an 'e' to his surname making it Daley.

The son Charles died in early infancy.

This is as much as I know. I would be very grateful if someone can provide any information at all about this Daly family living in or near Carrigtohill in the first half of the nineteenth century.
Thanks

Martin Daley

Nothing on ww.irishgenealogy.ie/ or the early Irish censuses or Griffiths Valuation

There are 19 Daleys in Cork in the Tithe Applotments 1823-37 (free at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/). There are a couple of Townland / Street names similar to Carrigtwohill.
