Has anyone ever researched the famous hurler Christy RIng's family tree?

His grandfather John Ring was aged 67 in the 1911 census in Cloyne but 51 in the 1901 census.

I have a Margaret Ring who married Thomas Shea around the same time that John married. Plus Margaret was living round the corner in Church Street, Cloyne.

Could they be siblings?

  • Hi,

Christy Ring's son, also Christopher, is an engineer with Cork County Council. I'm sure he'd know about Christy's family.

  • I don’t know the connection my husband’s family has, perhaps first cousins?  My father-in-law was the eldest Michael J. Ring, Jr., he had one sister and two brothers.  The statue of Christy in Cloyne looks EXACTLY like one of his brothers and many of the photos look like the other.  We had the pleasure of visiting Ireland in 2009, went to the GAA museum to see our famous relative’s medals, then stopped to see his statue on our way west.  Well, as if the surprise of the family resemblance wasn’t enough, finding the church just across the street to be St. Colman’s was another...as St. Colman of Cloyne was the parish church for the Ring family back here in the states and the church we were married in!
