You could also loom at the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) for information about Timothy and Honora Kiely.

Have you tried searching for information in Australia about their arrival there? There might be information about the ship 'Maria' and who arrived on it. These records should be available in the state records there.

Thank you Sinead.  I have quite a lot of information on Honora in Australia and the journey out on the ship "Maria".  I don't have anything on her story in Ireland ..other than her parents names - Timothy and Honora Kiely.   I am assuming that they may have died in the Famine.  I will check out the cork archives website.  Do you know if there are any details on the residents of the Kanturk workhouse ?  For example .. why they were in the workhouse ?

Looking for information on George William Forrest born approx 1864 in Cloyne, Cork.  Mother Bridget O'Regan, Father William John Forrest.  Siblings are unknown. We think two of his brothers entered the preisthood.

George was studying to be a doctor but his family couldn't afford it in the end.

George immigrated to Australia in the 1890's we think to Sydney NSW first then onto Maryborough Qld.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You should try checking the civil registration records at the General Register Office (GRO), as the records start from 1864. You can check them here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You could also try checking the Roman Catholic Church records for Cloyne. The diocese of Cloyne is quite large, do you know exactly which parish? If you do, then you could write to the parish priest for more information.

There were two seminaries in Ireland for the training of Roman Catholic priests: St Patrick's in Carlow and St Patrick's in Maynooth. Some of their records have been published:

• Maynooth students and ordinations index, 1795-1895 (Patrick J. Hamell Birr, Co. Offaly, 1992)
• Carlow College, 1793-1993 the ordinated students and the teaching staff of St Patrick;s College, Carlow (J. McEvoy, Carlow: St Patrick's College, 1993)

The Irish Directory was pubkished annually from 1836 and lists priests by diocese and parish.

Do you know where George was studying to become a doctor? If so, you could try checking the university concerned for information. They may have an archivist.

Here's a picture of the Work House location in Watergate Lane.

The work house is located in Red and possibly Yellow.  I use to live in the Blue one.

Thank you for the picture showing the location of the Kanturk Workhouse.   I would also be interested in finding out any information specifically regarding this workhouse and the conditions there around the late 1840's.   As I live in Australia it is difficult to get hold of any records unless they are online so any help would be appreciated.

If you are talking 1840 you are referencing famine times, and I believe the famine graves are located in the Kilroe area of Kanturk, which is north east of Greenane street, but I am not sure of its exact location.

There was an auxillary workhouse just across the road from Kanturk Park, on the Newmarket Rd. The uploaded photo doesn't show that area of the town.

There was the original work house listed on this map of the time which was situation above the present day hospital in Kanturk, although I don't remember any buildings being there.  Which would make the work house in Watergate Lane an auxillary too.
