I do not know much as I was adopted but I am trying to trace my GGF James Bartholomew Butler dob 15 May 1879 possibly from Douglas Cork . He was in the RGA as a gunner. (I have his silver war record) .He moved to England at some point and married on Isle of Wight in 1914.He had several children there and died in 1946 on IOW.  He did not always use his middle name on official records. (On some of his children's birth records he uses his full name on the later ones he drops the Bartholomew, he also did not use his full name when he married).  His Father was listed as William Butler a road contractor on his marriage certificate. The last name Cronin has also cropped up from stories and lore although I am not certain how that ties in with James at the moment. His dob has been confirmed from the 1939 records in England. Family lore has his place of birth as Cork and recently someone mentioned a possible 1911 census return listing place of birth as Douglas, Cork . I have not been able to locate the actual census at this time but he is listed as being in RGA on there as well. I would like to confirm if at all possible this information and find proof to support the stories. I am also looking for James' parents and any other sibling information. I hope someone can help me with this search. Thanks x

  • The Irish index to civil registration does not have a James Butler born on 15.5.1879 anywhere in Ireland. There were 13 possible births of someone of that name that year, only 3 of which were in the Apr – Jun quarter.  None in Co Cork.

Can’t see James in the 1901 or 1911 Irish census. Nor in the 1901 or 1911 English censuses.

  • Hi Sascha Jane,

See link below to a birth record in Douglas Cork, 16th May 1879, Alexander Cronin. May not be relavant but dates are close.       http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633276#page/27/mode/1up

  • Elwyn,

The lack of a James Butler 15 May 1879 in the Civil Registration seems to tie in with my experiences so far.

However you say that you located 3 possible births in the correct quarter in Ireland.

Could I possibly have the details please as I have yet to locate any that might be possibly correct.  With GRO references etc I can at least apply for research copies of the certifiates and see if any of them are correct / rule them out.

I did find a Bartholomew birth that might be correct however he is listed as Cronin and it  is in Douglas, Cork  with  William Cronin listed as father.

I am not holding out much hope that this is correct,  but I am not sure how reliable the evidence on the marriage certificate is from 1914,  given that it incorrectly lists his age I wonder if it could also incorrectly list the surname of his father William - either by accident or deliberately to avoid questions as to James using Butler as a surname.

[ There is some talk of a change of surnames occuring in his youth for some unspecified reason]

This is the 1911 census I mentioned the name is incorrectly transcribed as Buttler [I thought it was an English record but it is one from when the person was based overseas] : The date of birth is consistant with his marriage certificate which listed him as being aged 30 in 1914 and given a rounding up and down of birth dates that happened on some official documentation around this time makes me think it might well prove to be correct.

I don't know if anyone can help me with a new Irish ancestor question - I am not sure where best to post it as the county is unknown at this stage:

I have a Bridget listed on English census returns from 1841 -1871 as being born in T, Ireland

She is also mentioned on an English marriage certificate 19 Aug 1822 Marriage place Great Baddow, Essex, England  as Bede which has been suggested as a mis hear of Bridie or similar dimunitive of Bridget her last name is given as Megarla again a mis hear of an Irish last name. The actual marriage record is shown here

I would welcome any suggestions for possible name and place of birth to enable me to locate a birth or baptism record for her in Ireland before she married her English husband.
