I am a descendent of Cornelius Drew and Ellen Ronan. I believe that they were from Dromtarriff and I know that they came to Rhode Island, USA in 1854 with their infant son who was my great grandfather. I believe that Cornelius was the son of Cornelius Drew and Joanna Vaughan and that he was born about 1831 in Dromtarriff and that his younger siblings were Bridgid, Ellen, Denis, and James and that all but Denis also came to Rhode Island. I have found on the LDS/Family Search Org. baptismal records for the siblings but not for Cornelius, his wife Ellen Ronan, nor their son (named either Cornelius or Patrick) born in June of 1853. I am mainly looking for confirmation that Cornelius Drew born about 1831 and that his wife and son were all born in Dromtarriff and that they came to Rhode Island. I'm thinking that a baptismal record about 1831 of a Cornelius Drew with father Cornelius Drew and mother Joanna Vaughan would be great confirmation. Other confirming data would be a marriage for Cornelius and Ellen showing the names of the parents. Thank you in advance for anyone who might be able to provide this information. Hi Arlene,

Thank you very much for your message.

Civil registration only became mandatory in 1864 so for birth records marriage certs prior to this it is necessary to look at local parish church records.

Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Dromtarriff parish, follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Cork%20North-West&parish=Dromtarriffe&churchid=47

Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42

Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.

You could also try contacting Mallow Heritage Centre for assistance, as they may have copies of records available. However a fee may be involved. Here are their contact details:

    Mallow Heritage Centre,

    27-28 Bank Place,

    Mallow,

    Co. Cork.

    Phone: +353 (0) 22 50302 Email: mallowheritagecentre@gmail.com

I hope that this is helpful.
