My research into family history leads me to believe that our McCarthys came from around Durrus.  There were three brothers who resided on or near Four Mile Water.  Jeremiah and Thade (Timothy or Tadg an Bearla) lived on the Bantry side and Florence resided on the Dunmanus side.  I also find the word Scartbaun attached to a previous Jeremiah Mccarthy.  There was a farm called Ardra owned by Timothy.  Are there any tombstones in the Parish of Durrus with these names.  Does Ardra still exist?  Any help would be appreciated.   We are planning a trip to Ireland in late April and would love to visit some of these sites.

Many Thanks for any help.

  • Dear Pat

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and thanks for your email.

As regards Durrus, as you know, it is in west Cork. I have added a link below to show where it is located in relation to other parishes in the county. The Church of Ireland records for Durrus are listed as ?lost? while the Roman Catholic records for Durrus/Muintervara begin in 1819/1820. Assuming your ancestors were born after this time, you could try searching www.rootsireland,ie (a subscription site) and/or www.familysearch.org

There is an interesting website on the history of the parish including some graveyard information on http://durrushistory.wordpress.com/2012/08/13/selected-deaths-durrus-district-co-cork-1690-1950/

Best wishes and Happy St. Patrick?s Day

    Regards

  • Hi Pat,

Do not search roots.ie for the church records, instead look here.

    http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/

as this is free and fully searchable but not complete.

Scarthbaun is closer to Bantry so it is more likley that they are buried in Bantry graveyard. Unfortunatly they are very commom names in the area so you would need to be sure about the townland and some dates before searching any further on either of these sites. The site below shows a map of the townlands and will bring you to the Griffeth's valuations which has two McCarthy families in Scartbaun.

If you can find out any more details it would be a great help to narrow things down.
