Hi everyone,

I’m doing some research in a family tree which has led me to look for a grave in Fermoy. I plan to visit around April next year and would love to have an idea before I arrive. The grave belongs to Samuel Lister, who died in 1813 at age 20. It’s proving hard to find any records from that time. All I know is he was from Yorkshire, traveled to Fermoy in October 1812, an ensign in the 84th regiment at the Fermoy Barracks and drowned in the river Blackwater on June 19th, 1813. He was Anglican and the younger brother of the well known diarist Anne Lister. I’m not sure what cemeteries were around then or where exactly they buried him. Documents I’ve found only say buried Wednesday June 23rd in Fermoy churchyard close by Richard Henry Horton, a major who died in May 1813. Any help or knowledge of where that might be would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Jan.

  • Hi Jan!

I will forward your message to our Fermoy volunteer. If you have not done so already, could you fill out this form regarding your trip to Ireland next spring. Thanks https://irelandxo.com/meet-and-greet

  • Jan,

I am currently involved in a project transcribing the headstones at Castlehyde graveyard in Fermoy. There is a headstone to Richard Henry Harton, but I'm afraid there is no record of Samuel Lister anywhere in the graveyard. There is one flat stone near Richard Henry Harton that is very difficult to read, but seems to be to Edward? I will have a look at that again and see if there is any indication of Samuel. There are few written records for Castlehyde. It was common for people to be buried there with no headstone, so there would be no record of them. I will have a look again and see if I can find any record.

In the meantime, as Roger said, if you fill out the Meet and Greet form it would be a great help. I can show you around Fermoy and tell you all about Castlhyde, where Samuel is buried, and visit there of course!

    Best wishes, Kieran

  • Roger and Kieran,

Thank you so much. I’m so touched by your responses. If Richard H.H is there I’m sure that is where Sam is. I’d love to meet you Kieran and that sounds so great. I will definitely fill out the form. I haven’t finalized dates yet but the plan is early April 2024.

  • Jan,

Further to the above, I found this about Sam. It states his burial in Castlehyde, https://www.packedwithpotential.org/drafts/draft-sam

You may need to 'copy and paste' the link.

    Best wishes, Kieran

  • Hi again Kieran,

Wow you’re really good at this! It is such a relief to know where he is. Thank you so much! Please let me know if you check that stone again. Im curious if he had a stone or not.

  • Jan,

I am currently doing an alphabetical list of those buried in Castlehyde. I had R.H.Harton. Thanks to your message I looked at the headstone again and it says R.H.Horton. A fortuitous correction at the last minute. Thank you!

    Best wishes, Kieran

  • Hi Kieran,

Glad my message could help with that! It’s amazing what you’re doing to record all the names and keep track of them all before they are lost completely. I looked at some photos of the church yard and I don’t know how you can see anything on them! It looks very beautiful though. Also I was wondering about the form, will I receive an email from you or something? I really look forward to planning my visit.

    Thanks again!

Yes, if you fill out the form it will go to Denise at HO. Denise will probably respond and will forward the request to me. Look forward to meeting you.
