I have been told that all records of my great, great grandfather have been destroyed in a fire but have recently been informed that some churches have their own records..

I am searching for Michael Cotter born around the time of 1809/12 at Fermoy, Cork.. On Michael's death certificate states his fathers name was James Cotter

On the 20th of May 1830, Michael stole a sheep from William Hennessy.. Occupation listed as ploughman and reaper..Arrested in Rathcormac with the stolen sheep on the 17th august 1830.. Found guilty and transportedt to Australia on Nov 5th 1830..

Any information will be very appreciated We now believe that Michaels mother could have been Abigail Hickie

Thank you

With kind regards

Chris (nee Cotter)

  • Chris:

The RC records for Fermoy do not begin until 1828 which is too late for your interests.

  • I forgot to mention in my earlier reply (thank you again).. Could there have been another Church that held the records as the information I have is; 1809 or 1812- born in or around Fermoy, County Cork Ireland, father was James Cotter..

    Thank you again

    With kind regards

  • Chris:

    Sorry for the late reply.

Record keeping in the early 19th century was not as thorough as later in the century. You will also find gaps in a church's records because a priest misplaced or did not keep good records of his baptisms and marriages. I doubt that the records would be maintained in another church.

Here is a link to the parish. Send them an e-mail and see what they can tell you.
