My cousin and I are excited about our trip Sept 7-9 to Kilbroney--one of our ancestral homes. We are descendants of Mark Treanor (b 1819) and Alice Fearon/Feran Treanor (born 1817-22?) who immigrated to the US in 1852.  They had 8 children, 4 born in Ireland and 4 in Goshen Indiana. I believe Mark was the child of Daniel Treanor and Elizabeth Smythe of Kilbroney. I would appreciate any info on the family, and would love to meet Irish ancestors.

  • You don?t say what denomination your Treanor family were, but I assume it was RC, judging by the 1901 census for Co Down. (Most ? but not all ? were RC). That being so, the Treanor/Fearon marriage won?t be in the statutory records. (RC marriages were only recorded there from 1864 onwards).

Probably your best bet is to try and search the local parish records for it and for their baptisms, assuming both were born in that parish. PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast has a copy of the RC Kilbroney parish records for the years 1808 ? 1881. (There are no earlier church records than this for that parish).

The alternative spelling Trainor is much more common in Co Down than Treanor and you should bear that in mind when searching graves and records. People didn?t bother about how their name was spelled in the 1800s, and so you will find many variations. That represented the whim of the priest or other person recording the information, not any deliberate change of spelling by the family. (Many were illiterate and didn?t know how to spell anyway).

No. The PRONI records are not on-line. You need to go in person (or get someone else to go for you).
