Hello I am trying to find when my Great Grandmother died. Her name was Julia Sullivan (madien name O'Leary) She was born on 13th January 1874 in Ballycrovane and married James Sullivan on 29th January 1895. I know she was still alive in Kilcatherine in 1911.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
It would be very difficult to determine when she died. Kilcatherine civil parish is within the Castletown registration district. I just searched the civil death index records and there were a good number of Julia Sullivan death records.with a year of birth around 1874. The year of birth is provided by the informant who may or may not know the correct year of birth for the deceased. The records go up to 1958. I did find this one in 1954 which could be for your great-grandmother. You would have to write to the General Register Office to get a copy of this record which would cost around 4 euros. If you need instructions, let me know.

Hi Maria - I don't have the answer to your question to hand but in general terms I believe the following applies. All recent burials for the parish are in Gortnabulliga Cemetery as Kilcatherine Cemetery has no more free plots and can only be used to add extra coffins to existing graves. I am afraid I haven't been able to find out when Gortnabulliga Cemetery opened but that won't be too difficult to find out when I am over in Beara (I get there on Wednesday). I think there is a remote, but unlikely, possibility that she could be buried in Foilldarrig but that would have only been if there was an existing family grave there. Of course, the other thing to say is that she would most likely be buried in the same plot as her husband, Jim O'Sullivan, and I am a little surprised that your father doesn't know where his grandparents are buried. Riobard O'Dwyer did go around all the graveyards in Beara and record whatever he could decypher from the headstones and that research is, as far as I know, held in the New England Genealogical History Society in Boston, Massachusetts. Quite whether you could get somebody there to look it up for you, I am not sure. Anyway, I will find out what I can whilst I am in Beara and I am hopeful of seeing Raymond McCarthy, who may be able to assist in some way.

Thank you both for responding to my message. Unfortunately Roger that isn’t the right Julia. We now think she died between 1911 and 1925.
I have been to my Great Grandfather’s grave. He is buried in Kilcatherine near my Grandparents. The problem is there is no information about her on his headstone.

Maria:
Go to this link https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx print out the death form and fill it out to the best of your ability. Make sure you ask for a copy only. I would give them the info from the 3 index records and tell GRO that you want the record for the Julia from Kilcatherine parish. That way you should only be charged for one copy which would be around 4 euros. There is the possibility that none of the three records are for your Julia. You have to mail the request to Ireland (address provided when you print the form) but you can ask GRO to e-mail the copy back. I always use my credit card number and have had no issues.
