My grandfather was James Connell, born 20 November 1875 at Ballydehob in West Cork, the third son of William Connell (c.1841–1897) and Mary Anne (Minnie) Connell (1848 –1913). My great-great grandparents on my great grandfather’s side were Thomas Connell and Kathleen Aldridge, and on my great grandmother’s side Samuel Connell and Patience Levis (d. 9 March 1886). I know the birth and death dates for James’s siblings, Thomas (1873–1945), William (1877–1940), Richard (1882–1969), and Charles (1885–1971); the birth date only for Samuel (1874) and the death dates only for Mary/May (1963), Edward (1915; died in WWI), and Elizabeth Connell Sweetnam (d. 20 February1960) married to Frank Sweetnam; she was possibly born c. 1880. My aunt Winifred was the unofficial family genealogist, and my goddaughter, Allegra Connell Frank, and double-second cousin Stella Marston (my great-uncle William Connell married my grandmother’s sister, Mary Copithorne), have been working extensively on Ancestry.com

I would very much like to have more information about my great-great grandparents, especially the relationship between Thomas Connell and Samuel Connell and otherwise fill in any gaps on family members that Allegra and Stella have been unable to track down.

When my grandmother and aunt visit Ballydehob in the late 30s, they took a photo of “Ardura” and labelled it “father’s home”; a cousin of mine visited many years later and said it was still there at the head of Roaringwater Bay. Is it still there?

    There are two townlands: Ardura Beg and Ardura More. Ardura Beg is over 200 acres and Ardura More is over 300 acres. I located this Cottage advertisement which mentions Roaring Water Bay.

    The RC parish would be Aughadown/Aghadown and records start in July 1822 https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0008

    The records are on www.irishgenealogy.ie a free Irish government site which has the records for the parish of Aghadown and other parishes in the Diocese of Cork and Ross. (I assume you have used this site). This site also has images of civil records from 1864 on. Use the Civil Records Tab.

    I did check for a baptismal record for Thomas, Samuel and Mary Anne and there was no record. Likely they were born and baptized prior to 1822.

    I checked the Tithe records from 1830 for Kilcoe parish and there were a number of Connells in Crevolea North and South. There are no townlands by that name now and I'm wondering if Crevolea was an earlier name for Ardura or Corravoley likely the latter? One of these Connells could be the father of Thomas.

    Dear Mr McDonnell,

    Thank you very much for your prompt reply. I too noticed the cottage at Ardura Beg, but it is much too modern for the house in the photo, although the location seems right. I'll try to send you the photo in case the house still exists.

    My grandparents were both Church of Ireland, so I assume my grandfather attended St Matthias; my grandmother, Elizabeth Copithorne (1874-1962), was confirmed in Skull.

    Corravoley is a placename that has come up often in my searches, although mostly with the Copithorne side of the family.

    If you don't mind I will pass your information on to my goddaughter, Allegra, in hopes it will help her with her searches,

    Thomas Connell lived in Ardura-More Township, Kilcoe Parish. I think he was my GGG Grandfathers brother, Edward Connell who lived in the next Township - Corravoley.  

    The house that you left a picture of is still there and can be seen on Goggle Earth at:

    I posted a screenshot and if you look at the roof and shed, I would bet $100 bucks it is the same house.
