Her father was Patrick Gleeson born between 1800-1806. Died August 1878 in Halifax, NS His wife was Catherine. born ~1815 County Cork. Died, April 10, 1869, Halifax, NS.  I have not found her surname yet. Their chidlren that I know of were:

There was probably another son Timothy.
both Timothy and Mary I have not found any sign of in Halifax after the death of their father in 1878.

Ellen Gleeson's husband was also from County Cork, but I am unsure of which part. They were married in Halifax in 1847. The 1861 census shows the Gleesons and Sullivans living next to one another.

The Morning Herald - April 18, 1877

  • Thanks so much. This is fantastic...and so fast!. My first Ireland "hit". All my other lines the information is too vague to know exactly where they came from.
Tthis gives me one place to visit for sure next month.
There were some Hurly / Hurley families in Halifax at that time. I will try and round up the ones from Cork, and post them here.

In fact Jeremiah Sullivan and Ellen Gleeson's daughter
    Mary Sullivan - December 09, 1857 – sponsors - James Maher & Catherine Hurly.

    Thanks again

  • Hi Rose,

My g grandmother was a Hurley, I know I have the correct family as on one record it states Kilcoe.

There was also a Maurice Gleeson born 1846, Patrick also had a brother Richard who married 1822, a sister Julia and a brother Donatus in latin who married 1833.

I believe their father was James.

  • Hi Brendan

thanks so much for the additional Gleeson information.
I've started collecting some Hurley information for you. Don't know if any of these are yours or not, but they may be of some help.

I started with ones whose birthplace were Cork, or Ireland, and then started collecting descendents.

I haven't gotten too far yet, but will update as I have time and find more.

    I've shared the document here

    thanks again for your help

  • Hi again

Further information on my Ellen Gleeson (~1823- 1869) has surfaced. Patrick Gleeson and Catherine Hurley were not her parents, but her uncle and aunt.

Her father was Michael Gleeson, son of Timothy Gleeson and Maria Burchill. I'm not sure of her mother's name yet.

I'm not sure when Michael Gleeson was born. I found his estate papers in Halifax, NS. He died around February of 1871. He had a second marriage in 1862 in Halifax. His 2nd wife Catherine O'Donnell was born about 1811 in Parish Mothel, County Waterford, Ireland.

In his will he mentions his grandchildren Thomas and Mary Sullivan (children of Ellen Gleeson and Jeremiah Sullivan), and his brother Patrick Gleeson.

  • Hi Rose,

Might Ellen Gleeson's mother be Mary Sullivan? There is an Ellen Gasson [sic] who was baptised on 23rd Dec 1828 - here is the church record. The transcription is a good attempt compared with the original page (see here). The Patrick Glasson [sic] noted as the godparent could be the uncle you refer to... I haven't been able to find a marriage reference...

If so, there is a reference to a Mary Glasson, baptised Jul 1831 to the same parents - see here (note a Maurice Glasson as godparent - another uncle/cousin?)

    Regards

  • Thanks so much Jerry.

She is a distinct probabilty! There were also other (O)Sullivans in Halifax that my mother was told she was related to, but so far, I could find no connection to Ellen Gleeson's husband Jeremiah Sullivan, or any other branches of the family. If Ellen Gleeson's mother was Mary Sullivan, then that opens up a new avenue.

Jeremiah Sullivan's and Ellen Gleeson's 2nd daughter was named Mary, so more evidence. (but didn't every family have a Mary? :-) )

Patrick Gleeson and Ellen Hurley had a son Maurice, so maybe named after the Maurice in the baptismal record that you refer to.

http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ search is down at the moment, but can't wait to go digging around again.

    Thanks again

  • Hello Rose,

I'm not sure if you're still on this site but I am very interested in this thread as Jeremiah Sullivan and Ellen Gleeson are my 2x great grandparents.

Before my mother, Pauline Sullivan,  passed away in 2015, you were in contact with her friend, Carole, via e-mail assisting with research on my mother's family. This was about 8 years ago. I also believe your mother was in contact with my aunt Elizabeth Sullivan also doing research. I have tried to contact you through e-mail without success. I was hoping to be able to discuss whatever research was completed.

In the meantime, I'm still researching Jeremiah and Ellen's ancestors and having very little luck. I was also hoping there would be some records of their immigration from Ireland to Canada that I haven't been able to find either. I'm also still searching for their grave locations.

I do hope you are still active on this site and that I hear from you.

    Regards,

  • I think that this is the baptism for Jeremiah Sullivan listing his parents as Michael Sullivan and Mary Crowly.

"Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1740-1900", database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:624F-K4ZD : 23 June 2023), Michl Sullivan in entry for Jerh Sullivan, 1828.
